Because of the advantages such as compact structure, light weight, convenient control overaperture and easy realization of low side lobe and ultra-low side lobe, waveguide slot arrayantenna has been widely used in radar and communications. This article analyzes the basictheory of waveguide slot array antenna, and summarizes the design method of the waveguide slotarray antenna; broadside-wall and narrow side wall slot array antennas are designed. The majorcontents are summarized as follows:Firstly, an overview of the basic theory, especially radiation theory, of waveguide slot arrayantenna is outlined. Different types of slot on waveguide walls are analyzed as well as thecorresponding equivalent circuits. Standing-wave array and travelling-wave array are studied.Based on the theory of array antenna, the detailed analysis and comparison of Chebyshev andTaylor methods of array synthesis are given. Taylor method is found to be proper for the designof waveguide slot array.Secondly, for waveguide slot array antenna on the broadside, equivalent circuit method andactive admittance method are introduced, and a combination of these two methods are proposedin order to split and combine the three design equations to make up two equation systems for thecalculation of slot parameters. In the high-frequency electromagnetic simulation software HFSS,standing-wave array and travelling-wave array by waveguide longitudinal slot are designed.Finally, power transmission method is detailed discussed in the design of traveling-wave slotarray on waveguide narrow side wall. It is designed and simulated in HFSS. The method ofinhibiting the cross-polarization for the inclined slot on the narrow side wall is studied; one kindof twist slot is proposed to inhibit cross polarization. This feature is verified by simulation.
