In this paper, we propose a novel volumetric data modeling and analysis framework based on volume reconstructions with a seven-directional box spline, which provides a the-oretical basis for geometrical and topological analysis on discrete volumetric data. Under the new framework, we present fast and precise point-based iso-surface and critical point extraction algorithms, as well as surface and volume field quantity computation schemes, which are based on but go beyond the traditional volume reconstruction approaches. We also propose differential equations to trace the evolution of iso-surfaces, adhering to the famous Morse theory. Compared with previous works on volumetric data modeling, our results are much more accurate and reliable. As an application, we successfully located the active sites of Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) molecule by computing critical points and iso-surfaces of its molecular interaction field.
