Land plays an important role as a factor of production in agricultural societies. For Chinese farmers who are deeply influenced by traditional farming culture, land, with which lots of feelings and dignity are closely linked, not only is an important source of livelihood, but also means the value of life. But this kind of "land attachment" is quietly changing with a range of clash between traditional agricultural civilization and modern factors as time change. This article, according to the traditional-modern changing context and on the basis of existing research results, analyses the situation of land attachment of Chinese farmers since 1978 through participant observation and in-depth interviews and other methods. This attachment is both emotional and functional and can not be fully distinguished.Study has found that both internal and external factors are prompting farmers’ sense of land attachment to decrease in social development process. But the change is not the same among the farmers. This overall decrease of sense of attachment will have a major impact on the future development of rural areas, making how to enhance farmers’ attachment to the land a very important issue. The article has 7 parts:The 1nd and 2nd mainly introduced the basic information including question raising background, literature review, research significance, the theoretical framework and so on.The topic is raised on the basis of the reality that farmers’ land attachment is changing since the social development has speeded up.The literature review mainly elaborated the research results from both home and abroad on farmers-land relation, and the revelation and shortage in current research. The article hopes to have significance in two ways: to enrich perspective in study and to provide a reference value in solving practical problems.Based on the traditional-modern context, the article analyzes from the aspect of society change and self-development how the farmers perceive and adjust their emotion and attitude toward the land and how they emotionally and functionally locate themselves with the land from tradition to modernization. The 3nd part, which paves the way for later parts, mainly introduces the research methods and the interviewees’ information. This part talks about not only the participant observation and in-depth interview as the main research methods but also the reason why the researcher chose Q village as a subject.Based on the actual situation of the village, the article selects elderly, middle-aged and young people as samples to increase the persuasiveness. The 4rd part describes the situation of farmers land attachment in different periods.Experiencing from the "land to the home" policy on reform beginning, to the "half labour and half pessant" under migrant-working trend, then to the frustration after rural tax reform, farmers’ emotional and functional attachment to the land is in overall downturn state.Especially after the rural tax reform the farmers on the one hand want to get rid of the land, on the other hand they desire some new hope from the land. This ambivalence is the current portrayal of rural farmers’ land attachment. The 5th part analyses both external and internal factors that cause the decrease of farmers’ land attachment. The external factors include agricultural policy change, household registration system reform and the low compare efficiency of agriculture while the internal factors are mainly the change of values and ideas, diversity in ways of making a living and reference from others’ choices. The 6th part, based on the context of 4nd and 5th part and combined with the current realtiy, makes some specific observations and recommendations on how to enhance the farmers’ land attachment sense, which includes offering correct guidance on values and ideas, developing characteristic agriculture on local conditions, defending the red line to protect cultivated land, cultivating the professional farmers and so on.The last part draws the major conclusions as follows: the change of farmers’ land attachment is closely linked to the social development, the causes that influence this attachment include both external and internal factors, and that the decrease of the sense of land attachment is an obvious fact. This part also describes the limitations that exist in the article, and proposes prospects on research-related aspects in the future.
