Participatory video is a new approach to promote community participation. It can be used as a tool to empower people and promote social changes. Through the process of film making and screening, it can make the community members reflect on their own and community issues from their own perspective, and establish a new channel for the communication between vulnerable groups and the government decision-making departments, and thus to stimulate the change of individuals and communities, and to some extent solve the community problems. Participating in this "alternative media" provides a new perspective and a variety of choices for the needs assessment and intervention of social work, and has important practical value for the community work. Along with the transformation of social governance concept in our country, participating video as a new way to promote community participation in community construction and community development will have broader development space. This paper takes the participatory video projects of a social organization in Shanghai as an example, expounds the specific practice and exploration of participatory video in the urban community, and analyzes the promoting role of participatory video on community participation. At the same time, it is also recognized that there are many deficiencies in its practice of urban community in China, such as the non-standard operation procedures, the lack of social mobilization ability, the team structure to be improved, and so on. However, with the continuous development of economy and society in China, there is still a broad development prospect for participatory video in the urban community.
