It has become a global proposition of improving the quality of higher education. Under this background, the exploration of student engagement has appeared. Student engagement refers to time and energy that undergraduates devote to the effective educational practice. The educational administrative department and the universities want to affect and promote student engagement, which aim to improve the quality of higher education; the public want to know the real learning state of university students. Since entered the stage of popularization of higher education in China, the public’s expect has became more and more strong about the fair and quality of higher education. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the state of undergraduates’learning engagement in China on the perspective of family background.After reviewing related literatures, this thesis divides family background into three dimensions:the cultural capital, the social capital and the economic capital; and divide student engagement into cognitive, emotional and behavioral engagement. This thesis, from the perspective of cultural capital, analyzes the various of cognitive, emotional and behavioral engagement of undergraduates with different parents’educational level, family culture custom and family cultural expectation; From the perspective of family social capital, this thesis analyzes the various of cognitive, emotional and behavioral engagement of undergraduates with different family outdoor social capital, the atmosphere and content of parent-child interaction; From the perspective of the family economic capital, this thesis analyzes the various of cognitive, emotional and behavioral engagement of undergraduates with different family income. Under the premise of undergraduates’ difference in engagement, this thesis on comprehensively analysis of the difference of their family background, puts forward some related suggestions to promote student engagement from aspects of policy, school, family and student individual.
