Academic ability is an important index to measure the quality of postgraduate education, and the cultivation of academic ability is the core and key of postgraduate education. The academic development of postgraduate students also directly affects the national academic development. In recent years, academic research ability of postgraduate students attracts more and more attention. In the time when postgraduate student enrollment continues to expand, and the demands for high quality higher education resources, the quality of postgraduate education and how to cultivate the innovative talents arouse much more attention. The limited educational resource lead to the education quality landslide, especially in the training of ability in various aspects, such as weak scientific innovation ability, lack of new ideas, dissertations of poor quality.American’s training of postgraduate students maintains a leading position in the world, and the diversification of postgraduate education target, system and pattern of training talents and its high quality is recognized by many countries. China has maintained a sustained growth of studying in the United States in terms of the number of students in recent years and American has become Chinese students’first country of destination. In what aspects is America postgraduate education worth learning and studying? How to improve our study system and the cultivation of postgraduate education? These are the key problems for this paper to solve. This paper is based on Ernest Boyer’s multi-dimensional view of scholarship, to study the training of American postgraduate and compare it with China’s postgraduate academic ability, with the aim to inspire the training of Chinese postgraduate academic ability.This paper is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction. It mainly expounds the research background and the significance of the study, the definition of core concepts, research status at home and abroad, the paper’s main research contents and research methods, the innovation and deficiency.The second part is the academic view and its changes. This paper uses multi-dimensional view of scholarship as the theoretical research perspective. Through the changes America academic view, this paper explores the background, connotation of classical viewpoint on scholarship and its change, and the multi-dimensional view on scholarship as a new perspective of cultivating postgraduates’ academic abilities and its connotation and influence.The third part focuses on the training of the academic ability of the American postgraduate in the view of multi-dimensional scholarship. Through the comparison with the classical academic perspective, it tries to find out the new changes of the American postgraduate academic ability training.The fourth part compares postgraduate students’academic ability in the major of higher education in Xiamen University and the Harvard University. By selecting different aspects, this paper defines the similarities and differences of postgraduate training and summarizes the characteristics in terms of academic ability cultivation.The fifth part provides advices for academic ability training of postgraduates in China from the perspective of multi-dimensional scholarship to understand the current situation and problems of academic ability of postgraduate students in China, and puts forward the suggestions on the development of academic abilities for Chinese postgraduate training.
