A Study On The Usage Of Media And Expressions By The Hearing Impaired Youth Of Jinan City

According to the Chinese total population acquired by the sixth national census,the disabled accounts for the proportion of the total population and all kinds of disabilities accounts for the proportion of the total number of disabled people in the second handicapped person sampling survey, the total number for the disabled in our country is about 85.02 million at the end of 2012.There are 20.57 million hearing and speech disabilities which accounts for 1.58% of the total Chinese population.In recent years,the vulnerable groups in our country gradually get more attention,while the teenagers who are deaf and dumb as a special vulnerable group are on the verge of the media research area for a long time.In the information age,most people use the media as a channel to express themselves,while the deaf youth are always ignored by the society because of their physical defects.This paper take the deaf teenagers as the research object,through the methods of questionnaire and interview,to research on the present situation of deaf adolescents’ media use,media contact and the medium of expression.We hope this research can improve the survival state and the media environment of the deaf youth group by arousing the attention of the public.This research select Jinan Special Education Center for the survey,by using the form of questionnaire survey,to investigate all students at this two schools at the grade seven and eight.The design of the questionnaire is gradually compiled by interviewing the leadership,the teachers,the students and their parents from the two special education schools.This paper hope through investigating media needs,access to information,media expressing ways, the problems in media use and expression of deaf students, and putting forward the corresponding countermeasures against these problems to give advice for today’s deaf youth group on how to use information with no barriers.We hope that through this study the whole society will pay more attention to the deaf adolescents.The construction of information accessibility requires the joint efforts of the whole society. The study found that there is significantly difference between the ordinary people and the deaf youth in having the media and expressing by the media.For example,in terms of media use,both the frequency and time of using TV,internet and mobile phone are at the top in the deaf and dumb students’ learning life.The deaf teenagers are always only the receivers in the information dissemination activities for they rarely participate inmedia interaction.There exhibits unique characteristics when it comes to the motives of media contact and the content of the contact for the media.Likewise,there is also significantly difference of the perspective concern in media expressing.The study also found that there exists some problems when the deaf and dumb adolescents use the media and the process of expressing in the medium, so we put forward some comments and suggestions on how to solve these problems.We expect that through this study the deaf and dumb youth group can use the mass media to adapt the social life better so that they can integrate into the social life.
