The development of communicative competence of senior high school students has been getting more and more attention these years. However, the oral English teaching in China is not ideal in truth. How to advance the effective improvement of oral English teaching by which the whole capacity and disposition of senior high students can be raised becomes a major subject which we should look into carefully and systematically.This paper is mainly based on the theory of Functional Linguistics from which some subordinate language researching theories applied to language teaching has been brought up. On account of the inspiration what Functional Linguistics provides to language teaching such as the discourse analysis, the theory of register, the study of genre as well as language teaching methods like Situational Approach and Communicative Approach we are supposed to employ into oral English teaching. Integrating with the theories of Constructivism such as “Developing Zone” principle and “scaffolding instruction”, the application of Communicative Approach in oral language teaching is one of the targets of this paper. Besides the research of practical applicants of Communicative Approach in oral English teaching, we build a systematic design for oral English teaching in senior high hoping to enhance the communicative competence of students in helpful.General overview of this paper:The first part of the thesis tells the reason of making such research as to giving an importance to oral English teaching. This part of paper explains the main purpose and significance of the research as well as the analysis of previous studies on oral language teaching.The second part sets forth a summary of Functional Linguistics which is the essential theoretical basis of this paper.The third part constructs the design of research including the factors which influence oral English teaching and the practical applicants of Communicative Approach in oral English teaching.The fourth part deals with the data collections of the research above.The fifth section is the most important part that sets up a series of teaching ideas improving oral English teaching and stresses the attention to individual developmental factors of each student.Last but not least, we have examined the conclusion with the starting point all over again to recognize and orientate the value of this thesis in both theoretical and practical.The creative points of this thesis are that we manage to design the goal and model for oral English teaching based on the theory of Functional Linguistics; try to find effective methods and strategies for teaching processes; bring up more measures to oral English teaching according to modern educational theories like educational thoughts of Constructivism and multidimensional teaching.We hope that some points from this thesis can help oral English teachers to refine their teaching design and improve their teaching approaches. Furthermore, through practice, senior high school students’ English communicative ability and integrated language competence will be greatly improved.
