"Modernity " is regarded as a kind of spirit and temperament of time. It contains criterion and ideal of life, presents historical process of social change, pursues rationality and liberty, and aims at realizing the free and all-round development of human beings in the process of human society’s development. From this point of view, rationality and liberty are exactly the theoretical cores of the development of modern society. Rationality rescues human from shackles of theology and feudal thought gradually, and freedom makes human learn to know themselves, master themselves and develop themselves. Social science’s system was formed with the creation of modernity. Based on rationalism, humanitarianism, and mechanical civilization, it is marked by commodity economy and democratic system, and aims at achieving the prosperity of economy, social security of basic living, and improvement of the quality of life. The modernity of social sciences is based on the rationality and progressive value of contemporary ideological enlightenment, and pursues to offer reasonable basis and approaches of realization for universal human emancipation, so it reflects a kind of mental strength that can transcend the history and cultural difference. With the development of commodity economy and the progress of science and technology in modern society, the modernity of social sciences determines the antecedence for the development of human civilization under the strong push of the material strength.The main content of this paper is discussing the core theories of the modernity of social sciences in the process of generation, formation and development,which proposed by representative ideologists in different historical period. The paper is divided into three historical stages. The first stage is generation period. It mainly defines the origin time of the modernity of social sciences theories. This stage laid a foundation of the modernity of social sciences theory for later thought development. The second stage is formation period. The modern society is basically formed. Ideologists brought the research from outside to inside, focusing on the human inner world and specification of social development. All aspects of social research are involved and rationality was also mentioned widely in this period. The third stage is development period. With the rapid development of society, various kinds of social problems appeared gradually. The theory research focused on understanding of rationality and finding solution. The social science modernity is a continuing issue and its future is also a problem worth of thinking deeply.This paper aims at exhibiting the process of the changes of the modernity of social sciences, reveals its ideological characteristics, and tries to find the outlet of the modernity of social sciences in order to achieve the goal of promoting the harmony and healthy development of modern society.
