Public sector accountability processes play a key role in fighting corruption reducingpoverty, and enhancing public service delivery in Africa. Public institutions need to beeffective and accountable to the public.Sierra Leone as a post-conflict country, the level of accountability in the management ofpublic affairs is nothing to write home about, in spite of the various legal instruments andwatchdog institutions established to monitor the conduct of public official, there stillremain a huge deficit of corruption and unaccountability within the public sector,warranting investigation on whether the accountability institutions are effective in tamingcorruption and unaccountability within the public sector.As a contribution to the debate over the proper role of public sector efficiency andeffective performance, this dissertation aims to assess the state of public sectoraccountability in the country by focusing specifically on the strengthens and challengesfacing the accountability drive in the country and how the challenges can be addressed.The study adopts a desk-based qualitative and secondary data approach and analysis usingprescriptive and descriptive (graphical) techniques.The policy implication is that if the public sector is to get a sound and robust improvement,then proper delivery, regulatory and legal environment must be emphasized. The policyrecommendation is that the government should strive to attain sound public sector stabilityand growth.This study is made up of five chapters. Chapter one contains the introduction, chapter twois made up of the empirical and theoretical Literature, chapter three looks at an overviewof public sector performance and accountability whilst chapter four constitutes thestrategies for effective public sector accountability and chapter five is made up of theconclusion summary and policy recommendations.
