Among the study of nationalism, English is the dominant language. From the beginning of twentieth century, when independent and systematized academic study of nationalism took off in America, most of the influential research achievements have been written by English. At the meanwhile, paradigms of nationalism studies also emerged in English academia at the very start. Study of nationalism of present Chinese academia significantly depends on the resources of English academia. However, study of academic history of English academia provided by Chinese academia can’t be described as satisfactory. There exists room for improvement. The first chapter mainly focuses on the’expression-typology’ research of Carlton Hayes and Hans Kohn. They are two founders of nationalism, who lived in early twentieth century. The second chapter pays close attention to Karl Deutsh, who broke through previous model of research orientations and core works. Then, in the second chapter, I inspect two paradigms, primordialism and modernism, which arise under the’origin-evolution-embryology’ framework, in the sixties to seventies of the twentieth century. The third chapter focuses on the debates inside the modernism paradigm and a new paradigm, ethno-symbolism.
