Shakespeare In Shanghai (before1949)

Shanghai played a pivotal role on the propagation process of Shakespeare and his plays in China, no matter in the sense of geography, history.and culture. The thesis focused on shakespearean news and advertisements of Shenbao. as well as related other important documents, to research four shakespearean forms in Shanghai,which are Shanghai’s publications, crude stage plays of Shakespeare’s dramas. shakespearean films, professional Shakespeare’s dramas. The aim of this investigation is to explore the dynamic relationship between Shakespeare the classical foreign writer and Shanghai the modernized Chinese city. Under the hammer at accessible historical materials, I primarily analysis Shakespeare’s becoming and recreation subjected by Shanghai, exploring characteristics of Shanghai in Shakespeare’s plays at different periods. Meanwhile,we can study how Shanghai develop into a modernized and international metropolis in the mirror of Shakespeare’s development. Through the case study of "Shakespeare in Shanghai",this paper trys to provide reference and academic thinking for the study of global Shakespeare as well as Shanghai.
