Traditional decoration pattern runs through the China large and long historyculture system, including Buddhism, Taoism, Yin and Yang, five elements and otherdeep philosophy. Around the theme of survival and reproduction and a series ofconstant themes, the established symbolic language was formed. As the mostcommon and most widely-applied pattern in Chinese Lunar New Year, thetraditional pattern of "Baby holding fish" has been penetrating into civil life anddecorating the thick Spring Festival atmosphere through the development of history,and it is the inspiration and source of the modern culture and design.Taking "baby holding fish" as the research object, through the collection of alarge amount of real pictures and documentaries, the thesis combs and define thesource and concept of “baby holding fish”, and lay the foundation of the researchof the commonness and difference between Shanxi and Shandong’s auspiciouspattern. This paper analyses the art feature of "Baby holding fish" formed in differentregions of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River basin by comparing theauspicious pattern’s commonness and difference in Shaanxi and Shandong.The paper has taken a comparative research of "Baby holding fish" particularlyfrom its form, color, texture and the connotation in Shaanxi and Shandong. Throughsystematic arrangement, we can see the form difference of plainness and splendid,the composition difference of symmetry and balance, the color difference of simpleand complex, the texture difference of natural choice and containment, the themedifference of intuition and metaphor, then the paper analyzes the art features andform rule of the pattern of this pattern, then explains its rich cultural connotation.Finally, combined with the graduate design, and focused on the Chinese traditionalharmony culture, the paper makes a comparative thinking of the practical applicationof "baby holding fish" between the two regions, through the technique ofcombination of completeness and fracture, the fusion between surface and bottom toconcentrate a Chinese flavor, the paper hopes to offer some enlightenment in there-perceiving of this auspicious image and the design development in the future.Through the comparative research of "Baby holding fish" in Shandong andShanxi, in addition to the explicit explanation of pattern system of "baby holdingfish", the paper expects to enrich the study of the theory of the traditional decorationpattern and decorative design language and its related application so as to furtherexplore the traditional Chinese folk culture, making Chinese contemporary designhave more national vitality.
