Catholic missionary work in China for the third time started the dialogue with Buddhism in the end of Ming dynasty. Matteo Ricci choose the strategy that complementing Confucian and replacing Buddhism, which attracted many people converted to Catholicism, and Yang Tingyun is one of them.This article takes Yang Tingyun as an example to explore the dialogue between Catholicism and Buddhism in the late Ming dynasty and Qing dynassty. Yang Tingyun as domestic first Catholic, with Li Zhizao and Xu Guangqi called Catholic three pillars. Yang Tingyun as a Confucian, Buddhism and then to proselytize to Catholicism, as well as an individual who is carrying the Chinese culture and western culture. Yang Tingyun in order to support Catholicism wrote a series of works embody a concentrated reflection of its rich thought, Yang Tingyun some apologists of a strong response in Buddhism.In the history of the dialogue between Catholicism Yang Tingyun cannot be ignored, his thoughts is worthy of being studied, revaluation. Taking the dialogue between Catholicism and Buddhism as the axis, mainly on Yang Tingyun apologetic treatise Tian Shi Ming Bian, Dai Yi Pian, Di Yi Xu Pian and refining of important concepts of Catholicism and Buddhism:God and Buddha, the notion of element, soul, samsara, heaven and hell. At the same time,from the response of Buddhism to Yang Tingyun personal as well as Catholicism, to explore the Buddhist understanding and interpretation for Catholic and itself.In addition, this article also study the reflection on the dialogue between Catholicism and Buddhism in late Ming dynasty and revelation for the contemporary cultural interaction.
