ObjectivesAccording to the guidelines of the program of patient reported outcomes, combining with Chinese unique culture and the cognitive and clinical characteristics of visually impaired children, a specific quality of life measurement scale was developed which was suitable for visually impaired children in our country. The reliability, validity and discrimination of this scale were investigated using Field Investigation method to collect samples. The scale can be used to evaluate the quality of life of visually impaired children, and it can provide a more effective assessment tool to acknowledge the health status and the ability to participate in society for visually impaired children in China.Methods(1)According to the production and procedure of PRO scale, through the literature research method, Focus Group Discussion discuss method, the construction of the Quality of Life scale of visually impaired children was developed with common modules.(2)Through modified Delphi expert consultation method the advices on questionnaire from experts were collected and the various amendments were made for the structure and language, and established a database, examine the positive degree, experts concentration, degree of coordinated degree and authority. The quality of life initial selection scale of children with visually impaired was formed through repeated two rounds.(3)Through the onsite survey, the reliability, validity, and distinction of the scale were analyzed using correlation coefficient method、Factor Analysis Method、Item Response Theory. Finally, the final quality of life scale for visually impaired children was built.Results(1)The quality of life scale of visually impaired children include 6 fields and 41 items,According to the cognitive level and understanding at different ages in visually impaired children, we design 2 types of scales for different aged visually impaired children. The basis of fields and the items structure remain same, meanwhile the scale for parents’ proxy was also built in case of some children cannot understand and finish the scale.(2)The expert authority score of two rounds was 0.700 and 0.745; The coordination coefficients of the importance and accuracy of the second round of expert advisory were0.206 and 0.270, respectively.(3)Reliability: The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of whole scale was 0.95, each domain were from 0.527 to 0.777; the split-half reliability of whole scale was 0.765, each domain were from 0.451 to 0.660; the test-retest reliability of whole scale was 0.808, each domain were from 0.760 to 0.894.(4)Validity: Each item had a high correlation with the field, which the item in, and had a lower correlation with other fields. The correlation coefficients between each field and the total scale were higher than 0.5, and most of the correlation coefficients between each item and its field is higher than 0.6. The factor analysis results showed that when 13 common factors were extracted, the accumulated variance is 66.157%, the result after the variance maximum rotation was consistent with the theory. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the CFI of total scale is 0.71, and the CFI of each field are 0.95, 0.97,0.92, 0.92, 0.87, and 0.80 respectively.(5)Discrimination: The ICC curve of each item was fine; items were rich in information. Each entry was preferable ICC curve distribution; entry contained a large amount of information and small errors.(6)Feasibility: It took about 15~20 minutes to finish the scale, so it had high feasibility in visually impaired children.ConclusionsThe quality of life scale had higher reliability, validity, degree of differentiation, feasibility. It can be used for a more effective assessment tool to improve the quality of life and the ability to participate in society for children with visual impairment.
