Objective:The objective of this study was to identify and analyze the distribution of TCM syndromes, treatment principles and commonly used herbs of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as well as various factors including age, sex, occupation, related diseases, family history, pathological stage and tumor markers.Materials and Methods:115 medical records which met the inclusion criteria were collected from in patient department (IPD), Department of Oncology of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine from May 2015 to December 2015. Data collected with the help of specially designed form for this study were analyzed by using SPSS 21 and MS-excel.Results:In 115 NSCLC patients,64 were male and 51 were female, and mean age was 64.42±8.76 years. Male to female ratio was 1.25:1.79 (68.7%) patients were non smokers while 36 (31.3%) were smokers. The highest incidence of NSCLC was in age group 61-70 years; a total cases of 47 (40.9%). Total six syndromes were found where four were deficiency types and two were excess types. All syndromes found were compound. Among six syndromes,62.6% patients were diagnosed with deficiency of both qi and yin,25.2% patients with deficiency of lung qi and spleen qi,5.2% with stagnation of qi and blood stasis,2.6% with deficiency of lung and kidney,2.6% with accumulation of phlegm-dampness in the lung and 1.7% with deficiency of qi and blood. The nature of the syndromes was similar in different pathological sub-types of NSCLC with different clinical stages. Total 17 different principles were adopted for the management of six syndromes. Nine therapeutic methods were applied to treat the deficiency of both qi and yin while four different therapeutic methods were adopted for treating the syndrome with deficiency of lung qi and spleen qi. For the management of 115 NSCLC patients, total 223 medicinals including herbs, animal products and minerals were prescribed. Among the total medicinals, there were 204 different kinds of herbs,14 different kinds of animal products and 5 were minerals There was significant association between tumor markers CEA, CA125, and CA199 and deficiency of lung and kidney syndrome (P<0.05).Conclusion:A total of six syndromes; deficiency of both qi and yin; deficiency of lung qi and spleen qi; stagnation of qi and blood stasis; deficiency of lung and kidney; accumulation of phlegm-dampness in the lung, and deficiency of qi and blood were found in this study. For the management these syndromes in NSCLC patients,17 treatment principles were adopted using 223 medicinals including 204 different kinds of Chinese herbs,14 different kinds of animal products, and 5 different kinds of minerals.
