The Effect Of Group Counseling On Vocational Nursing Students’ Mental Health

Objectives:This study aims to explore the effect of group counseling on the mental health of vocational nursing students, and the meaning of developing psychological health education in vocational college; To explore the new way of psychological health education for vocational nursing students, providing references for wide psychological health education.Methods:535 university freshman from 10 classes majoring nursing in Yancheng medical college were selected as the participants,five classes were selected as experimental group,while another five ones were as control group.The students in experimental group were given group counseling which lasted 6weeks.,while no extra intervention were carried out in control group.Making use of psychological measurement software system of our college, all the participants were asked to finish the computer-connected questionnaire survey before and after the intervention, which included SCL-90, group unit feedback self-rating scale, self-rating scale of class unit members. Spss 19.0 software was applied to handle data in this study.Results:each factor score of SCL-90 was a little higher than national vocational average score. And it is statistically different in the aspects of obsessive-compulsive symptom, interpersonal relationship, depression, anxiety and hostility(P<0.05).but there was no statistical difference in the four aspects of somatization, terrorist, stubborn and psychotics(P>0.05).Before and after the intervention in the experimental group, it is statistically different in the aspects of obsessive-compulsive symptom, interpersonal relationship, depression, anxiety,hostility and psychotics(.P<0.05).but there was no statistical difference in the four aspects of somatization, terrorist, stubborn and others(P>0.05).Before and after the intervention in the control group, there was no statistical difference in each factor of SCL-90(P>0.05).Before the intervention,there was no statistical difference in each factor of SCL-90between experimental group and control group(P>0.05). However,after the intervention, there was no statistical difference in the aspects of obsessive-compulsive symptom, interpersonal relationship, depression, anxiety,hostility and psychotics and others between such two groups (P<0.05).Conclusion:Mental health status of vocational nursing students is not optimistic, vocational nursing students’mental health is worse than national average level, especially in the aspects of obsessive-compulsive symptom, interpersonal relationship,depression,anxiety and hostility.group counseling can help vocational nursing students improve obsessive-compulsive symptom, depression, anxiety, hostility and interpersonal relationship.group counseling is an effective way to carry out mental health education in school, it plays an effective part in solving students’psychological problems, promoting students’self-growth, and it is feasible to carry out the group counseling regarding the class as a whole.Group counseling program has been preliminary formed,including self-concept,time management, interpersonal relationship,learning to cooperate and behavior and cognition.
