Objective:1. To understand the epidemic prevalence status and characteristics and risk factors of injuries among undergraduates in Jiangsu province; 2. To learn the injury related KAP (Knowledge-Attitude-Practice) among undergraduates in Jiangsu province; 3. Exploring the risk factors of injuries in undergraduates; 4. Providing scientific strategies on prevention and control the injuries among undergraduates. Methods:A total of 4233 undergraduates were selected by using stratified random cluster sampling from nine colleges under jurisdiction of Jiangsu province. A self-developed questionnaire was administered to investigate the status of injuries and injuries related KAP (Knowledge-Attitude-Practice) through self-reported retrospectively. Descriptive analysis was used to depict the incidence of injuries and injuries related KAP. Chi square test and multivariable logistic regression model was used to analyze the risk factors of injuries.Results:1. Of the 4234 individuals, the overall incidence, person-time incidence, single injury incidence and repeated incidence of injuries were 13.7% (580/4234),17.6%(746/4234), 10.9% (463/4234), and 1.2% (49/4234), respectively. Among which, accidental injuries, self-injuries, and injuries by others counted for 79.0% (458/580),15.7% (91/580), and 5.3% (31/580), respectively. The main types of injuries were twisted/strained (35.9%,208/580), abrasion (21.2%,123/580) and incised/animal bites (15.3%,89/580). The main body parts of injuries were lower limbs (31.2%,181/580), head and neck (17.4%,101/580) and the trunk (12.9%,75/580). Walking (24.0%,139/580), sports (23.5%,136/580) and riding (17.1%, 99/580) were the most common activities when injuries occurred. Injuries mostly occurred in summer (35.9%,208/580) and autumn (24.3%,141/580); and 12:00-18:00 (49.3%,286/580) is the peak time of the day. Schools (41.9%,243/580), roads (18.5%,107/580), and gymnasiums (12.6%,73/580) were the most common places for injuries occurred. The leading causes of injuries mainly were falls (46.9%,272/580), incises (12.9%,75/580), and traffic incidents (10.7%,62/580). After injuries occurred,61.4% (356/580) were treated simply in hospital,32.8%(190/580) received a simple process by others.51.4% (298/580) need rest or vacation,27.9%(162/580) were hospitalized because of injuries. Of the 580 individuals occurred injuries,55.9% (324/580) were recovery,3.1% (18/580) loss some of body function.2. The average score of injuries related knowledge was 15.1±3.3 (total score was 20), and the overall awareness rate was 75.5%. Of the awareness rate for ten categories, "knowledge about concis", "knowledge about emergency refuge" and "knowledge about animal bites" were higher, in order,88.0%,87.3% and 84.2%; "knowledge about food safety," "knowledge about reasonable use of the medicine"and "knowledge about emergency rescue" were lower, in order,54.2%,64.4% and 65.4%. The average score of injuries related attitudes was 6.1±1.8 (total score was 8). Of the correct rate for three categories, "Attitude to nature of injuries," "Attitude to demand of injuries" and "Attitude to change the injuries related behavior" were 70.9%,74.8% and 80.9%, respectively. The average score of injuries related behavior was 26.7±4.6 (total score was 36). A total of 13.3% (561/4234) individuals had sex with others, among which, the proportion of using condoms always, occasionally and never were 17.3% (97/561),29.2%(164/561) and 53.5% (300/561), respectively.3. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that gender, ethnic, parents whether go out as migrant workers, and injuries related behaviors were independent factors associated with injuries occurred. Male (OR=1.6,95% CI:1.4-2.0), minorities (OR=1.9,95% CI: 1.4-2.6), and the behavior scored lower (OR=1.8,95% CI:1.4-2.2) were identified as high-risk factors, while using female, Han Nationalities, the behavior scored lower as references, respectively. The risk of individuals with mother go out as migrant workers (OR=2.0,95% CI:1.2~3.3), and parents go out (OR=1.5,95% CI:1.1-2.0), were significantly higher than those parents not go out.Conclusions:1. There were significant characteristics of the prevalence of injuries among undergraduates in Jiangsu Province:males and minorities were reported had higher incidence than females and Han Nationalities, respectively; summer and autumn were the main seasons for injuries occurred; schools, roads, and gymnasiums were the most common places for injuries occurred.2. The awareness rate of injuries related knowledge, correct rate of injuries related attitude, and correct rate of injuries related behavior were low, the level of "K-A-P" need to be further improved.3. Several factors could influence the prevalence of injuries among undergraduates, it’s need to takes a comprehensive consideration for development of health education and health policy.
