Objective To explore the psychological experience of breast cancer patients of postoperative chemotherapy with cancer-related fatigue while receiving gratitude intervention and investigate how breast cancer patients use gratitude to reduce their negative emotional responses and explore the effect of gratitude intervention on cancer-related fatigue.Methods This was a paralled control study.104 patients with breast cancer accepting postoperative chemotherapy in one hospital in Hunan were selected to be samples. They were randomly divided into two groups, 52 in the control group, 52 in the intervention group. Patients in the intervention group were received a four-week gratitude intervention while those in the control group were given routine care. The scores of Cancer Fatigue Scale,Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Self-Rating Depression Scale and The Gratitude Questionnaire-6 were evaluated before and after the intervention to analysis the effectiveness of gratitude intervention. Theresearch data were parallel double entried by Epidata and analyzed by SPSS 18.0 statistical software.The difference was statistically significant with P < 0.05.Results1. There was no significant difference in demographic characteristic between intervention group and control group(P>0.05),indicating the comparability of two groups.2. The scores of Cancer Fatigue Scale,Self-Rating Anxiety Scale,Self-Rating Depression Scale and The Gratitude Questionnaire-6 were no differences before intervention between the two groups(P>0.05).3. Before the gratitude intervention,the scores of Cancer Fatigue Scale were 25.45 ± 6.959,the scores of Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and Self-Rating Depression Scale were 52.43±7.524 and 55.61±7.691, both higher than the domestic norm.The scores of The Gratitude Questionnaire-6 were 29.75±3.533. The scores of Cancer Fatigue Scale were related to the scores of Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(r=0.650,P<0.01)and Self-Rating Depression Scale(r=0.654,P<0.01).4. After the gratitude intervention, the scores of Cancer Fatigue Scale(20.02±5.687)、Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(49.84±6.516) and Self-Rating Depression Scale(52.42±6.214) in intervention group were lower than the control group(P < 0.05) and lower than the scores before the intervention.5. After the gratitude intervention,the scores of The Gratitude Questionnaire-6(31.36 ± 3.064) is higher than the control group,demonstrating the differences showed significant(P < 0.05).Conclusion1. The anxiety and depression level of breast cancer patients with postoperative chemotherapy are both higher than the normal.2. Gratitude intervention can relieve breast cancer patients of cancer-related fatigue、anxiety and depression emotions who are receiving postoperative chemotherapy.3. Gratitude intervention can improve the breast cancer patients’ level of gratitude who are receiving postoperative chemotherapy.
