Objectives: The study aimed to develop a Chinese version of benefit finding scale to measure benefit finding in parents of children with cancer and discuss its influencing factors, in order to provide a reference for nurses to design intervention program. Methods: According to “the translation- back translation- cultural adjustment- preliminary test†model, introduced the English version of benefit finding scale which was developed by Antoni to the Chinese version of benefit finding scale(BFS-C). Through a pilot survey with 87 parents of children with cancer, assess the reliability and validity of the BFS-C by correlation coefficient, Cronbach’s α coefficient, content validity and construct validity(using exploratory factors analysis). From March 2015 to October 2015,170 parents of children with cancer in a third class hospital in Changchun were investigated with questionnaires by convenient sampling. The questionnaires included basic information questionnaire, BFS-C, Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire(BIPQ) and Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS). Apply Epi Data 3.01 and SPSS 17.0 to input and analyse the data. Statistical methods included descriptive analysis, T test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson or Spearman correlation analysis and multiple linear regression.Results:(1)The study formed the Chinese version of benefit finding scale. The scale was a single dimension scale by exploratory factors analysis. The Item-level Content Validity Index of all items were above 0.90. The average of all I-CVIs on the scale was 0.94. The Cronbach α coefficient of internal consistency reliability in BFS-C was 0.93.(2)The total score of benefit finding in parents of children with cancer was(61.52±8.05).The item 10:“taught me to be patient†got the highest average score. The item 1:“taught me how to adjust to things I cannot change†got the lowest average score.(3)There were significant difference in the total score of benefit finding in parents of children with cancer in the term of child’s age, time since diagnosis, the relation with child, parents’ age(P<0.05).(4)There were positive correlations between the total score of benefit finding with the total score of perceived social support and its subscales as well as the total score of illness perception.(5)Three variables which were social support, parent’s age and the relation with child were entered the regression equation of benefit finding in parents of children with cancer by multiple linear regression.Conclusion:(1)The Chinese version of benefit finding scale with appropriate number of items had good reliability and validity. It was applied to assessing the level of benefit finding in parents of children with cancer.(2) The level of benefit finding in parents of children with cancer was above average.(3)The influencing factors of benefit finding in parents of children with cancer included child’s age, time since diagnosis, parents’ age, the relation with child, illness perception and social support. |
