Currently cancer is one of the major diseases harmful to human health, and there is a lot of patients die in this disease every year. Radiotherapy is one of the three mean treatments of malignant tumors. Radiation is used in this treatment to kill cancer cells. As radiotherapy can`t distinguish cancer cel s and normal cel s, this treatment may cause some side effects like radioactive encephalitis and radioactive esophagitis.To reduce side effects caused by radiotherapy and increase the efficacy to cancer of radiotherapy, some drugs are used to assist radiotherapy. Currently traditional Chinese medicine is widely used in radiotherapy.Dragon blood derives from the valuable traditional Chinese medicine, and has been widely used in clinical treatment. It is effective in Activating blood circulation, hemostasis, relieving pain and Anti-inflammation, and at the same time, anti-lipid peroxidation, eliminating oxygen free radicals, enhancing the activity of SOD and catalase. Dragon blood has become a kind of potential Anti-radiation drug.Our early study confirmed that dragon blood has obvious effection of anti-radiation on the damage model in rat induced by heavy ion radiation, neutron and γ ray, the medullary damage model and intestinal radiation disease model in mice induced by γ ray. We conclude dragon blood has certain resistance to radiation effect. This study aimed to explore the reducing toxicity and increasing efficacy to radiotherapy of dragon blood in Lewis lung carcinoma in mice. Mean while, the MTT experiment of Lewis lung carcinoma cell was done.This study successfully established Lewis lung carcinoma model in C57/BL mice, and radiotherapy Lewis lung carcinoma mice irradiated by 4 Gy γ-radiation, and then the mice were treated by the dragon blood. The effect of dragon blood on Lewis lung carcinoma mice and radiotherapy Lewis lung carcinoma mice is estimated, through the following index: live status, survival situation, changes in body weight, tumor weight, tumor volume, tumor metastasis and blood index. The experimental results show that the effects of dragon blood on tumor weight, tumor volume, tumor metastasis are not so obvious. But dragon blood has good effect on radiotherapy Lewis lung carcinoma mice through live status, survival situation and blood index. In vivo experiment show that at low dose, short-term treatment conditions, the dragon`s blood and its extracts have a role to promote the Lewis lung carcinoma cell survival. But with the increase of drug dose and treat time, the dragon` blood and its extracts have no obvious effect on survival of Lewis lung carcinoma cel. In a word, dragon blood can be used to reduce the side effect of radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer.
