OBJECTIVE: To observe the efficacy of scalp penetration acupuncture combined with wen acupuncture on Wind-Cold Dampness Blocking type of knee osteoarthritis and to explore the potential therapeutic mechanism.METHOD: Sixty knee osteoarthritis patients were randomly divided into treatment group and control group, thirty subjects each group. The patients in treatment group received scalp penetration acupuncture combined with wen acupuncture while patients in the control group were treated by conventional wen acupuncture only. Patients in each group were treated fifteen days a session for two sessions. After that, MPQ pain questionnaire, score of the severity of degenerative osteoarthritis of the knee,score of osteoarthritis of universities of western Ontario and Mc Master, and the criteria of therapeutic effect of osteoarthritis of the knee were used to evaluate the outcomes.RESULT:(1)In the treatment group, total effective ratio is 93.33%, and curative rate is 73.33%, which are better than that of the control group with total effective ratio and curative rate are 80.00% and 50% respectively. There is significant difference between the two groups(P<0.05).(2) There are significant difference between the two groups(P<0.05) in respect of the MPQ pain questionnaire, score of the severity of degenerative osteoarthritis of the knee, score of osteoarthritis of universities of western Ontario and Mc Master,and the criteria of therapeutic effect of osteoarthritis of the knee.CONCLUSION: Scalp penetration acupuncture combined with wen acupuncture is better than wen acupuncture in treating Wind-Cold Dampness Blocking type of knee osteoarthritis, and significant difference was found between two groups.
