Objectives:1. To survey the current status of the critical thinking ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas.2. To compare the critical thinking ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas.3. To survey the current status of the self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas.4. To compare the differences of the self-learning ability between nurses with different background.5. To explore the relationship between the critical thinking ability and self-learning ability of nurses.6. To offer solutions to promoting the critical thinking ability and self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas. Methods:By convenience sampling, total 404 nurses from 4 district hospitals in areas in Nanjing city were investigated with Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory in Chinese Version(CTDI-CV) and the Nurse Self-learning Ability Rating Scale.Results:1. The total score of the critical thinking ability was 276.03±24.43.Truth-seeking was proved to be the lowest capacity while the highest score was analyticity in seven dimensions.2. Age, practicing year, marital status, title, position could significantly affect critical thinking ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas(P<0.05).> 35 years old, working time>15 years, married, supervisor nurse (position) and head nurse were significantly higher than others in nurses’critical thinking ability (P<0.05).3. Shift, nurses who were leading in section, participating in research project, participating in academic exchange meetings, taking part in degree in education could significantly affect nurses’ critical thinking ability in district hospitals in suburban areas (P<0.05). Ofen on the day shift, nurses who were leading in section, participating in research project, participating in academic exchange meetings, taking part in degree in education were significantly higher than others in nurses’ critical thinking ability (P<0.05).4. Administrative office, education background and the average monthly wage, work unit in the past, shift, engaging in advanced studies, setting learning goals could not significantly affect nurses’ critical thinking ability in district hospitals in suburban areas(P>0.05).5. The total score of the self-learning ability was 122.57±18.00. Self motivational belief of the scores was 52.32±7.85, task analysis of the scores was 20.75±3.89, self-monitoring and regulation of the scores was 35.84±5.73, self-evaluation of the scores was 13.66±2.67,the task analysis and self-evaluation scores were low.6. Title, shift, work unit in the past could significantly affect self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas(P<0.05). Head nurse, ofen on the day shift, work in non-state-run hospitals in the past were significantly higher than others in nurses’ self-learning ability (P<0.05).7. Nurses who were leading in section, participating in research project, taking part in degree in education could significantly affect self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas(P<0.05). Nurses who were leading in section, participating in research project, taking part in degree in education were significantly higher than others in nurses’ self-learning ability (P<0.05).8. Age, practicing year, position, the average monthly wage, education background and marital status could not significantly affect nurses’ self-learning ability in district hospitals in suburban areas(P>0.05).9. Administrative office, shift, participating in academic exchange meetings, engaging in advanced studies, setting learning goals could not significantly affect nurses’ self-learning ability in district hospitals in suburban areas(P>0.05).10.The critical thinking ability correlated positively with self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas. Inquisitiveness and maturity were the protective element for nurses’ self-learning ability.Conclusions:1. The critical thinking ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas was at the middle level, they were competent enough to provide health care, but was not up to high level and still need to be promoted and strengthened. Analyticity was proved to be the highest capacity while truth-seeking being the lowest which need to be strengthened.2. Age, practicing year, marital status, position, title, shift, nurses who were leading in section, participating in research project, participating in academic exchange meetings, taking part in degree in education were influencing factors of nurse critical thinking ability.3. The self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas was at the middle level, which need to be strengthened.4. The influencing factors of self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas were title, shift, work unit in the past, nurses who were leading in section, participating in research project, taking part in degree in education.5. Inquisitiveness, maturity and critical thinking ability correlated positively with self-learning ability of nurses in district hospitals in suburban areas, inquisitiveness and maturity were the protective element for nurses’self-learning ability. Promoting inquisitiveness and maturity could enhance nurses’self-learning ability.
