Objectives:To describe the status of chronic health literacy, depression and self-care ability about elderly patients with chronic diseases in Yanbian area; To understand the difference of chronic health literacy, depression and self-care ability among demographic characteristics; To investigate relationships among chronic health literacy, depression and self-care ability in elderly patients with chronic diseases in Yanbian area.Methods:The convenience sampling method was used in this study.700 questionares were given out, and 688 of them was withdrawed. The effective rate was 98.2%. In this study the investigation method of the questionnaire was used, including the general information questionnaire, the health literacy scale for chronic care, geriatric depression scale (GDS) and activity of daily life scale (ADL). All the data were analyzed using SPSS 17.0.Results:(1)The results of showed that the average score in elderly patients with chronic health literacy was 56.86±21.44; The average score of depression was 8.33±3.20; The average score of basic daily life ability and functional daily ability were 28.00± 5.18 and 15.23±6.55, respectively.(2)The average scores for the 4 dimensions of chronic health literacy scale.lmformation acquisition ability, interaction ability, intent of improving health and intent of financial support, were 21.16±8.60,21.37±8.10,9.89±3.99,4.43± 2.27, respectively. The highest was the intent of improving health, and the lowest was the intent of financial support as percentage.(3)The GDS includes 15 items, and each item of value range is 0-1. The items of "Basic satisfaction whith life" (0.74±0.44) and "living meaningless" (0.64±0.48) were in the top levels. "lacking help in your sitiation" (0.44±0.50) was in the lowest level.(4)Every purpose range of basic activities of daily life was 0 to 3 points, each entry score was balanced, and the top three scores were controling over bowel elimination, having meal and defcation. In the dimension of functional ability in daily life, the ability of using the phone, taking medicines and handling financial ability were in the top levels.(5)ANOVA analysis showed that there were significant differences in scores of health literacy in different gender, age, educational level, occupation, income, suffering from a disease, suffering from a variety of disease,nearly six months to see the doctor(P<0.05).(6)ANOVA analysis showed that there were significant differences of depression in the different age, gender, marital status, living conditions, degree of culture, suffering from a variety of disease, covering medical insurance or not (P< 0.05).(7)ANOVA analysis showed that there were significant differences in the daily life ability scores in the different marital status, living condition, economic income, suffering from a variety of disease, covering medical insurance or not (P< 0.05).(8) ANOVA analysis showed that there were significant differences in the daily life ability scores in different gender, age, marital status, living conditions, cultural degree, occupation, suffering from a variety of disease, covering medical insurance or not (P< 0.05).(9)The correlation coefficient between health literacy and basic daily life ability was 0.398. The correlation coefficient between health literacy and daily life ability was 0.563. The correlation coefficient between basic daily life status and depression was 0.200. The correlation coefficient between basic daily life and functional ability was 0.610. The correlation coefficient between functional ability and depression in daily life was 0.298.Conclusion:(1)The level of health literacy and the ability of self-care activities were low for elderly patients. Depression has become a common mental health problems in elderly patients with chronic diseases, which were impacted by many factors including physical, psychological, family and social.(2) Health literacy in elderly patients with chronic were influened by gender, age, educational level, occupation, income, suffering from a disease, suffering from a variety of disease,nearly six months doctor visits.(3)The depression in elderly patients with chronic were disease influened by age, gender, marital status, living conditions, education level, suffering from a variety of disease, covering medical insurance or not.(4) The basic daily life ability of elderly patients with chronicdeseases were influened by age, marital status, living condition, economic income, suffering from a variety of disease, covering medical insurance or not. The functional ability of daily life of elderly patients with chronic deseases were influenced by by gender, age, marital status, living conditions, cultural degree, occupation, suffering from a variety of disease,covering medical insurance or not.(5)In elderly patients with chronic diseases, health literacy, depression, self-care ability were positively correlated.
