ObjectiveProfessor Mei Guoqiang, one of National Instructors of Academic Experience Inherit of old Chinese Medicine Experts, is knowing well about Zhongjing Doctrine, Doctrine of Seasonal Febrile Diseases, and good at drawing the successful experience of other masters. With the rich clinical experience in treating spleen-stomach diseases, Professor Mei has formed his own academic thought and clinical experience. This study sums up the academic thought and clinical experience of professor Mei Guoqiang treating spleen-stomach diseases. This research will be beneficial to inherit his academic thought and popularize his clinical experience, as well as improve the ability of clinicians treating spleen-stomach disease. At the same time, the research will lay the foundation of summarizing Professor Mei’s academic thought and clinical experience comprehensively and systematically. MethodThrough literature Analysis, books and papers related to Professor Mei’s academic point of view and clinical experience were studied systematically; the clinical data of his treatment of spleen-stomach disease cases from 2005 to 2014 were collected by different methods such as observing and recording the clinical work with Professor Mei. Through case collection, tracking of completed cases, analysis of patients with general information, main symptoms, curative effect and treatment prescription, those cases were retrospectively analyzed. This study summarized his experience in treating spleen-stomach diseases by using the treatment of stomach diseases, and refined his academic thought and prescription regularity based on therapeutical principles. ResultThe academic thoughts of Professor Mei Guoqiang can be divided into six parts as follows: ①He holds that when treating the spleen-stomach diseases, syndrome differentiation of six-meridian should be given first priority. On this basis, he suggests that the use of classical decoctions should be expanded flexiblely when treating the spleen-stomach diseases; ②He maintains that the three-dimensional thinking patterns, of which the main part is syndrome differentiation of six-meridian with that of defensive qi and nutrient blood and triple energizer as the minor part, together with the clinical experience which thought of Shanghan and Wenbing, such as “to preserve the body fluid”, “to nourish the stomach-yin”, “to distinguish tongue inspection”, build up his unique thoughts of syndrome differentiation.③He supposes that the connection between the spleen and stomach and other zangfu should be studied deeply. Probe into the cause and effect of the spleen-stomach diseases to seek out if there are accompanied symptoms of other zangfu. ④ He also still points out that, epigastric oppression, vomiting, diarrhea are the typical symptoms of syndrome of cold-heat jumble in spleen and stomach. Whatever, atypical symptoms are also commonly seen clinically, and tongue inspection can be the break-through point in this time. ⑤With the changes of modern social environments, pathogenic factors become complicated. He believes that the changes of the times should be considered, such as the temperament disorder caused by mental stress, diet disorder caused by the change of dietary structure and habits. ⑥ He stresses the significant status of “preventive treatment of disease” in the treatment of spleen and stomach disease. His clinical experiences can be divided into eight parts as follows: ①He often treats cold-damp syndrome of the spleen and stomach with Lizhong Decoction. When the disease develops into the syndrome of yang-deficiency of spleen and kidney, Sini Decoction should be applied as the prescription. ②As for stomach-yin deficiency, he often use Shashen Maidong Decoction to nourish stomach-yin. If accompanied with constipation, herbs which can mildly warm the middle energizer and promote qi circulation, can be added to the decoction, so as to achieve the effect of relaxing, bowels. ③He holds that, when faced with the syndrome of spleen disorder caused by stagnation of liver-qi, Sini Powder or Shugan Hewei Decoction, can be applied to the patient to soothing liver and harmonizing stomach, in order to restore the descent and ascent of qi. When dealing with the syndrome of spleen deficiency caused by hyperactivity of the liver-qi, we should attach importance to invigorate spleen and purge the liver of pathogenic fire of relieving pain and stopping diarrhea, with Tongxie Yaofang being, more appropriate to it. ④He considers that, Wuling Powder can be used to treat phlegm(water) stasis syndrome to invigorate the function of the kidney and increase the secretion of urine and can be applied to the syndrome. He often uses Linggui Zhugan Decoction to treat phlegm fluid retention belonging to the syndrome of weakness of Spleen-Yang. Fuling Gancao Decoction is suitable for water stagnation in middle energizer induced by yang deficiency. ⑤As to the patients with syndrome of phlegm obstruction in middle energizer, he often use Xiaoxianxiong Decoction to clear away heat and resolve phlegm; If the shaoyang meridian qi were not smooth, Chaihu Xianxiong Decoction should be used. Spleen-stomach disease belonging to syndrome of Shaoyang cardinal disadvantageous and phlegm heat stagnation, with temperament symptoms, can be treated by Chaihu Wendan Decoction. ⑥He often prescribes Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction to treat the syndrome of blood stasis obstructing the stomach collaterals. Constipation, belonging to the syndrome of dysfunctin of Shaoyang meridian and Yin-blood deficiency, Chaihu-Siwu Decoction can be used to restore its function. ⑦He often uses three kinds of Xiexin Decoction to treat syndrome of cold-heat jumble in gastrointestinal tract. Longtime diarrhea without obvious pathogenic cold or heat can be treated with Wumei pill. ⑧In treating two meridians simultaneous onset disease, When faced with Taiyang and Shaoyang simultaneous onset disease, Chaihu Guizhi Decoction can be used to harmonize Shaoyang and Ying Wei. He often prescribes Chaihu Wendan Decoction and Chaihu Haoqin Decoction to treat the hand-foot Shaoyang simultaneous onset. Chaihu Haoqin Decoction can harmonize Shaoyang and disperse pathogenic qi and respectively expell evils from triple energizer, which is suitable for severe circumstances and is partial to expelling from triple energizer. When faced with Taiyang and Yangming simultaneous onset disease, Gegen Decoction can be used to relieve exterior syndrome. When faced with Yangming and Shaoyang simultaneous onset disease, Dachengqi Decoction, Dachaihu Decoction, Chaihu Mangxiao Decoction, Huangqin Decoction can be chosen to use according to different syndromes. ConclusionWhen treating the spleen and stomach diseases, Professor Mei Guoqiang learns from Zhang zhongjing, and advocates that doctrines of Shanghan and Wenbing should both be thought highly of and be combined together. He has formed three-dimensional thinking patterns, of which the main part is syndrome differentiation of six-meridian, with the syndrome differentiation of defensive qi and nutrient blood and triple energizer as the minor part, as well as other ways of syndrome differentiation. He regards the eight channels to expand the usages of classical decoctions as the ground rules and is good at multiplying the use of classical decoctions and decoctions of Chaihu. This research systematically summarized the academic thoughts and clinical experiences of Professor Mei Guoqiang in treating the spleen-stomach diseases, which is beneficial to inherit his academic thought and promote his clinical experience.
