Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy of treatment with Western medicine compared with Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine, as well as to propose a more effective treatment for Postsurgical Gastroparesis Syndrome(PGS).Method: The clinical data of 36 cases of Abdominal Postsurgical Gastroparesis Syndrome cases referred to the department of General Surgery of our hospital from January 2005 to December 2014 was analyzed retrospectively. They were divided into three groups according to therapeutic methods used:(1) Treatment with Western medicine group: 14 cases;(2) Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine with acupuncture group(Western Medicine with acupuncture treatment): 13 cases;(3)Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine with acupuncture and Chinese medicine group(Western medicine therapy with acupuncture and Chinese medicine treatment): 9 cases. TCM therapy included acupuncture and Chinese medicine therapy.Acupuncture was done once a day and prescriptions of Xiaochengqi decoction were administered through the nasogastric feeding tube twice daily. Comparison among patients about bowel sounds recovery time and gastrointestinal decompression duration was made after different therapy, evaluating the clinical curative efficacy of each group after 3 weeks of treatment. The number of patients who were cured, improved or invalid for statistical analysis was collected and the curative and effective rate were compared. Summarizing the cured cases after each period of treatment, the recoverytime for each group was compared separately.Result:(1) There were statistically significant differences(p < 0.05) when comparing the bowel sounds recovery time and duration of gastrointestinal decompression duration among different groups. The recovery time and duration of gastrointestinal decompression in the group of Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine group were shorter than that of Western medicine group alone(p <0.05). The comparison of both the Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment groups showed no statistical differences(p > 0.05). 2. The curative efficacy of each group after 3 weeks of treatment was compared. The cure rate of Western medicine, Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine therapy group patients with acupuncture and Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine with acupuncture and Chinese medicine therapy group were 14.3%, 61.5% and 66.7%respectively. The rate of the two latter groups were higher, showed statistically significances(p < 0.05), but the comparison of the two combined traditional Chinese and Western medicine therapy groups showed no statistical significances(p > 0.05).The efficiency of each therapy group was 57.1%, 76.9%, 88.9% respectively, showing no statistical significances(p > 0.05). 3. 36 cases of PGS all recovered by non-surgical treatment, 12 to 42 days after the onset of PGS, with the average treatment of 24.2days and cure rate 100%. Western medicine therapy group was on an average treatment of 28.2 days. Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine with acupuncture group was an average treatment of 21.9 days. Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine with acupuncture and Chinese medicine therapy group was on an average treatment of 21.1 days. There were statistically significant differences(p <0.05) between the recovery time of PGS among different groups. Recovery time of Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine group was shorter than that of Western medicine alone, showing statistical significance(p < 0.05). However, the comparison of the two Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment groups showed no statistical difference(p > 0.05).Conclusion: The nonsurgical treatment of Abdominal Postsurgical GastroparesisSyndrome, Western medicine and Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine were effective. The bowel sounds recovery time, gastrointestinal decompression duration and PGS recovery time of Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment group were shorter than those of Western medical treatment group. Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment has better curative effect than Western medicine treatment after 3 weeks of treatment.Combined Traditional Chinese and Western medicine can be widely used in clinic for PGS.
