Objective:Hepatitis virus was reported to be associated with an increased risk of kidney cancer. However, the role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in RCC is still unestablished. Thus we conducted this retrospective, case-control study to determine whether HBV infection is associated with kidney cancer.Materials and Methods:A disease based case-control study was conducted including267cases of kidney cancer and834controls. Clinical data including medical history, laboratory test, imaging examination and histological result were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed with the use of electronic medical record system. The gender, age, body mass index (BMI), history of hypertension, history of smoking adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and95%confidence interval (CI) for chronic HBV infection were calculated in logistic regression model. Results:The frequency of chronic HBV infection was much higher in male kidney cancer patients than in nephrolithiasis group, bladder cancer group and colon cancer group (16.27%vs9.33%, P<0.05;8.48%, P<0.05;8.29%, P<0.01, respectively). Such phenomenon has not been observed in female patients. The AOR of chronic HBV infection was2.055(95%CI1.150-3.673) compared to nephrolithiasis group,1.983(95%CI1.124-3.499) compared to bladder cancer group and1.754(95%CI1.009-3.048) compared to colon cancer group. Conclusion:The frequency of chronic HBV infection in male kidney cancer patients was much higher than in controls. HBV infection might be associated with male kidney cancer.
