Objective The relative factors for infection after ventriculoperitoneal shunt are analysed, for the sake of offering theory basis to prevent infection The operation will be modified to reduce the infection rate. Methods The modified protocol was developed based on regular operation protocol, which was applied to290procedures undergoing a ventriculoperitoneal shunt(modified group), the regular protocol was applied to94procedures(control group). A comparison of postoperative infection rate was done between two groups, Infection rate between different age, preoperative condition, the type of hydrocephalus and step of protocol will be analysed. Results The postoperative infection rate in the modified group was6.55%(19/290), and the control group [13.83%(13/94)](P<0.05). Prophylactic antibiotics therapy(OR=0.053,95%CI:0.010-0.276, P<0.001), complete restain of periosteum and embedded port (OR=0.078,95%CI:0.020-0.307, P<0.001) and a small curved incision of head were associated with an decreased risk of infection. Infection rate of infant(<1year) is15.15%, and Patients after treatment of infection had highest infection rate(14.71%).Conclusions The modified protocol for ventriculoperitoneal shunt significantly reduces the postoperative infection rate. Low age, especially for the infant was the risk factor for infection, and patients after treatment of infection were the most suscepible to be affected.
