| Objective: Via the measure of level of plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) inchronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients to explore its correlation withcharacteristics of syndromes in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Methods: Patientsdiagnosed with COPD who met the inclusion criteria were recruited in this study. Themorning fasting blood was extracted from them for determination of BNP level. Relevantdata such as age, occupation, smoking history, annual acute exacerbations and history ofCOPD were collected and compared with syndromes in TCM as well as underwentstatistical analysis in order to discuss the relationship between diverse syndromes inTCM,general condition and the level of plasma BNP.Results:57cases of COPD patientswith syndrome differentiation and treatment were discriminated into5syndromes, the typeof phlegm-heat obstructing lung proves to be the largest part. The differences in plasmalevel of brain natriuretic peptide were not statistically significant between differentsyndromes (P>0.05). The differences in gender distribution and total course of diseasewere statistically significant between five kinds of syndromes (P<0.05).Conclusion: Typeof phlegm-heat obstructing lung were most common in the COPD patients The level ofBNP was abnormal in patients with deficiency syndromes, especially inlung-spleen-deficiency and kidney-deficiency patients. The course of disease was longestin patients with syndrome of water overflowing due to Yang-deficiency. Abnormal BNPlevel was also common in patients with low body mass index. |
