ObjectiveUnder the guidance of Chinese medicine theory, the curative effect of acupuncture treatment of Bell palsy has been clinical confirmed. By using opposing needling to treat facial paralysis at acute stage and quantify its clinical efficacy to shorten the course of disease and improve the clinical effect as a more safe and effective treatment than regular acupuncture.MethodsAccording to the diagnostic criteria of ’Bell palsy" in Neurology, randomly divided 60 patients with facial paralysis in acute stage who meet the above code into two groups,30 cases in each group. The treatment group use the opposing needling in acute stage and a conventional acupuncture after the convalescence. The control group use regular acupuncture during the all process, The treatment lasted thirty minutes each time and carried once daily for 28 days. The acupoints used by both groups are the same.During the early, middle and late stage of treatment, by respectively using the House-Brackmann(H-B) facial nerve function grading scale, to evaluate and to observe the changes in facial nerve function through surface electromyography(sEMG) with contralateral RMS average ratios. Through the statistic analysis, the differences of the two kind of treatment methods have been evaluated as below.Results1. Before the treatment, the basic lines of two groups had no statistical significance(P>0.05) which is comparable.2. Each group had one patient falling, and there are total 58 cases included in statistics eventually,29 cases in each group. After the acute phase of treatment, The clinical efficacy of two groups have no different(P>0.05). After total of treatment, the treatment group cured 14 cases, effective in 8 cases, valid in 6 cases, invalid in 1 cases, the total efficiency of 96.55%; The control group cured 8 cases, effective in 7 cases, valid in 11 cases, invalid in 3 cases, the total efficiency of 89.66%. Comparing two groups of patients with clinical efficacy, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).3. After total of treatment, the sEMG value in the amount of frontal muscle and orbicularis oris muscle of both groups of patients were significantly increased compared with treatment (P<0.01). After the acute phase of treatment, the comparison between the two groups frontal muscle and orbicularis oris muscle signal value showed no difference (P>0.05). But the comparison between two groups showed the statistical significance after the treatment(P<0.05).ConclusionBoth acupuncture methods are effective for the treatment of Bell palsy, the advantage of acute needling is not immediately apparent, but of the clinic efficacy and recovery of facial nerve function then its long-term efficacy is superior to conventional acupuncture. That indicates this effective act worth clinical promotion. |
