Objectives:The aim of this article is to observe the improving effect of Buyanghuanwu Decoction on the score of ASIA sensory, motor and FIM, the latency of SEP and MEP for Postoperative patients with spinal cord injury,to explore the effect of Buyanghuanwu Decoction in treating of postoperative patients with spinal cord injury. So as to provide a proven and effective method for postoperative rehabilitation of spinal cord injury patients. Methods:The 44 acute spinal cord injury patients received and cured by Spinal departments of Luoyang orthopedic-traumatological hospital from October 2013 to August 2014 were randomly divided into experimental and control groups according to the time of admission. All subjects accepted open reduction and decompression surgery under emergency or sub emergency (72h after injury), were applied dehydrant, hormones, anti-inflammatory and neurotrophic drugs after operation. Patients in experimental group on the basis of the above treatments had been taking Buyanghuanwu Decoction since the first postoperative day, one dose a day, for 12 weeks. All subjects underwent routine rehabilitation training during their hospitalization, and continued rehabilitation after their postoperative 4-5 weeks out of the hospital to go home. The American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) and Functional Independence Measure(FIM) standards for evaluation were used to assess the recovery of all subjects’sensorimotor function and self-care ability of life, respectively before surgery, in 28 days after surgery, and in 12 weeks after surgery. In addition, respectively before surgery and in 12 weeks after surgery, the patients were asked to accept electromyography examination to record the latency of somatosensory Evoked Potentials(SEP) and Motor Evoked Potentials(MEP).Finally, the SPSS 18.0 statistics software was used for data analysis, all obtained data was expressed as a mean±standard deviation (X±S).The gender, age, injured segments, duration, extent of damage of patients in two groups were compared by difference analysis. And measurement data was analyzed by t test and analysis of variance, which without meeting normal distribution was analyzed by rank sum test. Well the enumeration data was tested by Pearsonχ2. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results:To comparison in group, the experimental and control groups’ASIA sensorimotor score, FIM score of 28 days after surgery and 12 weeks after surgery, and latency of SEP and MEP of 12 weeks after surgery compared with pre-operation were both significantly improved. In 28 days after surgery, the ASIA sensory score and FIM score compared with pre-operation was no significant difference (P>0.05), and the ASIA motor score compared with pre-operation was statistically significant (P<0.05).In 12 weeks after surgery, to experimental group, there was a significant difference on ASIA sensory and motor score, FIM score between the three time points (P<0.05), also the latency of SEP and MEP compared with pre-operation was significantly different (P<0.05). To control group, there was no significant difference on ASIA sensory score and FIM score between the three time points (P>0.05).However there was a significant difference on ASIA motor score between the three time points (P<0.05), and the latency of SEP and MEP compared with pre-operation was significantly different (P<0.05). To comparison among group, there was no significant difference on ASIA sensorimotor score,FIM score and latency of SEP and MEP between the 2 groups of subjects before the operation (P>0.05), which was comparable. In 28 days after surgery, there was no significant difference on ASIA sensory score and FIM score between the 2 groups of patients(P>0.05), but ASIA motor score between the 2 groups was was significantly different (P<0.05). In 12 weeks after surgery, there was also no significant difference on ASIA sensory score and FIM score between the 2 groups of patients(P>0.05), nevertheless there was a significant difference on ASIA motor score and latency of SEP and MEP (P<0.05).Conclusion:1.Buyanghuanwu Decoction can improve spinal cord injury patients’ sensorimotor score and FIM score, can shorten the latency of SEP and MEP, play a role in promoting nerve functional recovery.2. Buyanghuanwu Decoction have a better improvement in motor function than in sensory function to spinal cord injury patients.3. The improvement in latency of SEP is more significantly than in ASIA sensory score after treatment with Buyanghuanwu Decoction for 12 weeks.
