Objective To investigate the effects of experiences of Chinese famine (1959~1961)during early life with diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose in the adult.Method The date from Health examination crowd of Kailuan Group in2006~2007. Atotal of101,510cases participated in the health examination. We Selected subjects whowas born in hebei province from1956.10.01to1964.09.30and remove subjects who hadincomoplete data. Finally19,347subjects were included for final analysis. Based on thedate of birth the subjects were categorized into five exposure cohorts: famine exposuregroup, semi-exposure group, nonexposed group. Compare diabetes mellitus prevalenceand the detection rate of impaired fasting glucose among famine groups. Using logisticregression model to analyze the effects of experience of famine during early life with theprevalence of diabetes mellitus and the detection rate of impaired fasting glucose in adult.Result1Prevalence of diabetes mellitus and the detection rate of impaired fastingglucose in famine exposure group among adults cohorts were8.99%、8.96%, the semi-exposure group were8.05%、9.35%, the group in control were7.71%、8.2%.2Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that experiences of famine during earlylife increased the risk of diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose in adult. The oddsratios (95%CI) were1.218(1.056~1.404)、1.142(0.994~1.312), after stratification by sex,the male odds ratios were1.163(1.001~1.350)、1.213(1.039~1.417), female odds ratioswere1.319(0.920~1.891)、0.990(0.679~1.444).Conclusion Experiences of famine during early life increases the risk of diabetesmellitus and impaired fasting glucose in the adult. This negative effect existed mainly inthe male.
