Objective:This in vitro investigation aimed to study the morphological changes in dental tissues of root caries after using several different methods for caries removal. Methods:Thirty extracted elderly people teeth with similar size of moderate carious lesions were used in the study. They were assigned to three groups depending on the method used for preparation:Traditional turbine drill group;Carisolv group and Er,Cr:YSGG Laser group. The preparations were performed strictly according to the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use of instruments. The teeth samples were prepared for histological study and investigated by a scanning electron microscope at different magnification; The morphological changes in the tissues and the working time were registered and compared. Result:Time needed for conventional traditional turbine drill is (6.81±1.23)min. Carisolv group(17.41±0.86) min, Er.Cr:YSGG laser group(7.12±0.89) min. Carisolv group compared to the traditional turbine drill, Er.Cr:YSGG laser(.P<0.05), the difference was statistically significant; Traditional turbine drill group compared with Er,Cr:YSGG laser group (P>0.05), there was no statistically significant difference; There were considerable differences when we analysed the photomicrographs of the specimens obtained using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). In preparing the surface using conventional turbine drill, the smear layer was thicker and only a little dentinal tubules orifices were open, the dentin embolization rate was91.1%. SEM analysis of dental tissues prepared with the help of Carisolv gel showed a rough, retentive surface, dentin tubule embolization rate was65.6%. The teeth surfaces prepared with Er,Cr:YSGG laser remained without smear layer and clearly exposed dentinal tubules orifices. The surfaces were highly retentive and dentin tubule embolism rate is only13.3%. According to a=0.05, P<0.05, the difference was statistically significant, three therapy embolism rates is different. Pairwise comparison between the three groups showed P<0.05, there is a difference between the three groups, but Er,Cr:YSGG laser group embolism rate is the lowest, is the most effective treatment. Conclusion:The teeth surfaces prepared with Er,Cr:YSGG laser remained without smear layer and clearly exposed dentinal tubules orifices. The surfaces were highly retentive.
