| ObjectivesAims of the present study were to explore the awareness rate of the high school students on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Yanling county; and the attitudes on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) carriers and patients; and the requirement and accessibility of the service on AIDS control and prevention; and the awareness rate of the AIDS related policies and regulations, as well as sexual behaviors and related attitudes; and then to evaluate effects of health education and provide scientific basis for promoting the health education work and enacting special measures for AIDS control in high school.MethodsRandom cluster sampling method was conducted, and two classes in the first and second senior high schools are selected in Yanling County respectively, and all the students in these classes were recruited. The two high school were divided randomly into intervention group and control group. Anonymous baseline survey among the students was adopted by self-designed questionnaire. A variety of AIDS health education measures were taken in the intervention group, while none measure was taken in the control group. One month later, effect of health education was assessed using the same questionnaire. EPIDATA version3.1was adopted to construct database and data quality was controled by double entry method. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version13.0. ResultsThe awareness rate of the high school students on basic AIDS knowledge was72.37%in Yanling County. About58.75%of the high school students opposed premarital sex, and the significant difference was found between different genders. Only4.67%of the high school students had sexual experiences. About76.65%of the students had acquired AIDS service. About93.77%of the students thought it was necessary to carry out health education of AIDS and most of the students had acquired the knowledge by leaflets, posters, boards and television. The students hope to receive health education by expert lectures, leaflets or brochures, advertisements, posters or exhibitions, peer education, the school teacher, as well as other ways. About59.43%of high school students confessed they felt fear when contact with AIDS patients and the positive attitudes they held on the patients with different infection ways were significantly different. About45.53%of high school students thought patients with HIV infection should be isolated by force to prevent further spread. Only43.19%and50.19%of the students were willing to dine or study together with AIDS patients, respectively. About52.14%of high school students were willing to make friends with AIDS patients. Awareness rate on AIDS related laws and regulations of the high school students was low and remained only46.69%. Under the health education, basic knowledge of AIDS awareness rate, the ratio of those opposed to premarital sex, the awareness or positive attitude to HIV carriers, the qualified rate of awareness on AIDS related laws and regulations in intervention group increased significantly compared with the control group.ConclusionsThe awareness rates on basic knowledge and related laws and regulations of AIDS remained low in high school students of Yanling County, and the lower proportions of positive attitudes to those with HIV infection or AIDS patients and negative attitudes to premarital sex were found.Its suggested that the related health education of AIDS was very necessary.In additionally,the health education on intensive class for high school students was effective and feasible in improving the awareness rate on basic knowledge of AIDS, premarital sex ratio, proportion of AIDS related laws and regulations, as well as knowledge qualified rate. |
