ObjectiveTo review the clinical data to compare the surgical outcome ofcongenital heart disease with or without Down syndrome, evaluating theimpact of Down syndrome on surgical management in patients with CHD.Methods77Down syndrome patients who underwent surgery for congenitalheart disease in Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University fromJanuary2009to June2013were compared with the data of77randomselected non-Down controls.Results1The most common cardiac lesion in the study group was ventricularseptal defect (51.95%) followed by atrioventricular septal defect (31.17%).2The difference was not significant between the age, weight, genderand pulmonary hypertension within the groups except Team Ⅱ being alittle younger. The time of CPB and ACC was longer in complex CHDpatients than simple CHD patients. 3Complex CHD patients with Down syndrome were more common tohave LCOS.4Infection rate were significantly higher in Down syndrome children,so were longer with ventilation and intensive care unit stay.5There was a trend that congenital heart disease with Down syndromehad a high rate of mortality in the study group.ConclusionDown syndrome increases the risk of postoperative congenital heartdisease complications, influencing low cardiac output syndrome, pulmonary complications, severe infections and mortality. Down syndromealso is the risk factor of prolonged mechanical ventilation, ICU stay.
