Objective: To investigate the relationship between Excitatory amino acids,Glutamine and Aspartic acid, Inhibitory amino acid which include Gammaaminobutyric acid and Glycine in human glioma’s surrounding and the presenceof tumor-associated seizures(TAS).To provide clinical basis for the study ofpathophysiological mechanism of glioma secondary epilepsy. Methods:Westudied a prospective cohort of patients who underwent a craniotomy for asupratentorial glioma or subtentoria gliomal. Peritumor tissue specimens wereassayed for Glutamic acid, Aspartic acid, Gamma aminobutyric acid andGlycine concentration by automatic high-speed L-8900amino acid analyzer.Differences between the seizure (TAS) and seizure-free (non-TAS) groups werecompared.Clinical data from Department of Neurosurgery Affiliated Hospital ofGuilin Medical College from2012May to2014January. Results: Glutamicacid,Aspartic acid, Gamma aminobutyric acid and Glycine had significancedifference between the groups seizure (TAS) and seizure-free (non-TAS)(allP<0.05). Glioma associated with epilepsy group peritumoral tissue with higher concentrations of glutamate, Aspartic acid and lower concentrations of Gammaaminobutyric acid and Glycine. Correlationship analysis between amino acidlevels of sample and epilepsy ill showed that the correlation coefficient ofglutamic acid, aspartic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid, glycine were0.96,0.95,0.95,0.96.Glutamic acid, aspartic acid were positively correlated with epilepticseizures, while gamma-aminobutyric acid and glycine were negatively related. Conclusions: the excitatory amino acids Glutamine and Aspartic acidconcentration increased in glioma secondary epilepsy peritumoral tissues, yet,Gamma aminobutyric acid and Glycine concentration decreased. The proportionof excitatory and inhibitory amino acids increased in seizure group. Glutamicacid, aspartic acid were positively correlated with epileptic seizures, whilegamma-aminobutyric acid and glycine were negatively related.Relative changedof excitatory amino acids and inhibitory amino acid concentration and theproportion in tumor-associated seizures group may play a mechanistic role intheir pathogenesis.
