Three-dimensional television has become very popular recently for its stereoscopy, which can bringaudience a sense of realism with stunning visuals. However, the symptoms which are caused by theprolonged watching of3DTV, such as visual fatigue, dizziness and queasiness, have been documented. In this paper, electroencephalograph and functional magnetic resonance imaging are used to study therelationship between visual fatigue and functional brain areas. The major work of this paper is presented as below:1. The2D/3D changes of EEG in the four wavebands, namely,,, and four fatigue-relatedalgorithms,(+)/,/,(+)/(+) and/are compared. Besides, in combination withsubjective assessments and based on the energy of waveband and four algorithms, theevaluation model for visual fatigue of3DTV is established with a regression equation.2. In order to optimize, the model based on energy feature parameters needs to be refined. A newevaluation model for3DTV fatigue is then established with EEG signals of gravity frequencyand power spectral entropy. The new valuation model shows higher accuracy and stability.3. While watching3D displays, we observe that the states of the brain change from awake tomoderate fatigue over time by analyzing EEG data recorded during viewing3D displays.Specifically, the brain state is awake in the first20minutes of watching3D video, the fatiguelevel then increases within20to45minutes, and the most serious fatigue is experienced after45minute, which is moderate fatigue and even some participants were severe fatigue.4. Detect visual fatigue caused by watching3D displays based on fMRI. Compared to the2D group, more significant differences are found in cortex related to3D imaging by analyzing the responsesof checkerboard stimulus, which are highlighted in BA8, BA17, BA18and BA19,. Statisticalanalysis results of function images data also reveal the strongest activation at BA8(the frontaleye field, FEF). These results are consistent with brain regions obtained by EEG data.Consequently, watching3DTV for a long period has significant psychological and physiologicaleffects, mainly including visual fatigue, and even affects human health. From the result of detectingvisual fatigue by recording EEG data during watching3DTV, we suggest that the time spent onwatching television is40minutes at most. As a result, this paper can assist to effectively establishhealth criteria for watching3DTV.
