Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer), belonging to Araliaceae family, is the dried root ofplant of ginseng. Research showed that: the main active material in ginseng included ginsengsaponin, polysaccharide and amino acids, etc. Ginseng has a variety of physiological activitiesof anti-tumor, anti-aging, adjusting the physiological function and enhancing immunity, and, itsfounctions for skin whitening, moisturizing and antioxidation were recognized by both domesticand foreign researchers. In addition, dihydro quercetin as the main active flavonoids in larch, itscontent was4%, and of stable properties, and of potential additives in cosmetics.Based on the main indicator of the content of arginine double glycoside (AFG), the methodfor preparing red ginseng extract was set as the ultrasonic extracting with water, and the extractwas handled with anion exchange resin for decoloration. Finally, weakly basic anion exchange resin of type D900was proved to be good in decolorizingtreatment, but the AFG loss was big. So, the cost of adding extracted AFG as the main rawmaterial was high in cosmetics. It was necessary to use synthetic AFG, for controlling productcosts. The result of investigation for the synthesis conditions of AFG showed that the synthesisratio for arginine and maltose being1:2, in80℃, reaction time1h, crude AFG was produced.Crude AFG was dealt with cation exchange chromatography for adsorption process, and with1%of the ammonia elution separation of eluent recovered solvents, freeze-dried. The powderRich in AFG was separated and purified with biological glue to get AFG refinement. HPLC wasapplied for determination of the purity of AFG, which was more than98.2%.In this paper, AFG was used as the main functional component, and ginseng extract anddihydro quercetin were added as well. By HPLC method, contents of active substances such asAFG,6kinds of ginseng saponin, and dihydro quercetin were detected in cosmetics. Ingredientscomposition suitable for adding was inspected and selected, for determining the formulation andthe quality control standards for cosmetics.Based on obtaining the formula of cosmetics, in vitro antioxidant activity and moisturingfunction were tested. The results showed that the series cosmetics of AFG had goodmoisturizing effect, the scavenging activity for DPPH free radical, which positively correlatedwith the content of active substances. Superposition effect existed among AFG, ginseng extract, and dihydro quercetin in the removal of DPPH free radical. Scavenging rate of cosmeticscontaining ginseng extract and dihydro quercetin was very high. Series cosmetics of AFG cleared ABTS radical in vitro, and scavenging rate related to the amount of active materialadded.Series of cosmetics with AFG from ginseng and red ginseng were proved to be active inscavenging the DPPH free radical, scavenging ABTS free radical in vitro and moisturizing. Therefore, AFG could be used for the production of cosmetics. This study provided certaintheoretical and the practical basis for the development of ginseng series of cosmetics. Moreresearch in this area needed to be further carried out.
