Objective: By analyzing the impaction of maternal periodontitis on adverse pregnancyoutcomes,to further explore the relationship between maternal periodontitis and pretermlow birth weight infant and the possible mechanism behind the relationship. Methods: Selecting30puerperas of PLBW and30full-term birth puerperas respectivelyaccording to the rigorous inclusion criteria. Checking and recording the periodontal clinicalstatus, including probing depth, clinical attachment loss and bleeding on probing, and themother’s age, gestational age, education level, newborns’ weight. Venous blood samples, amniotic fluid and gingival crevicular fluid of puerperas were collected. Levels of IL-6,TNF-α, PGE2in the serum, amniotic fluid and gingival crevicular fluid were assayed byenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Results:1.No statistical significance was found between preterm group and the full-termcontrol group in mother’s age(P>0.05); There was statistical significance betweenpreterm group in gestational weeks, newborns’ weight and mother’s education level (P<0.05).2. There was statistical significance between the prevalence of periodontitis in preterm andfull-term group comparison (X2=8.52,P<0.05). No statistical significance was foundbetween preterm group and the full-term control group in light, medium of periodontitis.3. There was statistical significance between the preterm group and full-term group in thematernal peripheral blood, amniotic fluid and gingival crevicular fluid IL-6, TNF-α andPGE2,as the concentration in the preterm group is higher.(P<0.05).Maternal peripheralblood IL-6, TNF-α and PGE2levels was respectively negative correlated with themother’s gestational weeks and the newborns’ weight..(P<0.05)4.Maternal gingival crevicular fluid IL-6, TNF-α and PGE2levels was positive correlatedwith the maternal peripheral blood ones.(P<0.05). Maternal gingival crevicular fluid IL-6, TNF-α and PGE2levels was positive correlated with the maternal amniotic fluid ones.(P<0.05).Conclusions:1.Worse periodontal conditions of the puerperas were found, highermorbidity of preterm occurred as the morbidity of preterm group was higher than full-termcontrolled group.2. IL-6、TNF-α、PGE2levels in the peripheral blood serum and amniotic fluid may beaffected by maternal periodontal infections and have been risen, then lead to theoccurrence of PLBW. Maternal periodontitis may be one of the dangerous factors ofPLBW.
