With the fast process of land management and agricultural modernization in China, the irrigation demand for large farmland is becoming larger and larger. As the central first document illustrates this year: we have to build up 1 billion mu concentrated, drought or waterlogging high standard farmlands by 2020 and the effective irrigation areas have to be 1 billion mu too. The 13 th Five-Year plan outline also poses the water saving agriculture, smart agriculture policy in an important position. The “green high efficiency water saving irrigation equipment project” has been proposed in the 13 th Five-Year special project of the Ministry of science and technology. As a result, the development of intensive and high efficiency water saving irrigation equipment accords with national strategy. Hose reel irrigator, typical type of small and medium-sized irrigation equipment, is especially suited for the irrigation needs of scatter plots, hills or farm fields in China which has an promising future in farming equipment. However, the hose reel irrigator produced in our country now is of low quality. The problems mainly are shown in the following aspects: Non-standard design theory method, rough manufacturing process and low reliability product quality etc. The transmission system is the most important part of hose reel irrigator, which decides the transmission efficiency and irrigation quality. This paper introduced and summarized the design methods and advantages of advanced prototypes of foreign countries and then modern mechanical design and simulation optimization methods were used for the transmission system of JP75 type machine. The main research content includes the following several aspects:1. In order to meet customers’ needs of wide speed range, large transmission ratio and high efficiency functions in JP75 machine, a new structure gearbox was designed based on worm gearing. According to initial parameters given, Multi-objective genetic algorithm in MATLAB genetic algorithm toolbox was used to optimize continuous mixed discrete variables so that we can not only get biggest transmission efficiency value but gearbox volume can also be the least. The optimizing results showed that the efficiency improved by 16% and the volume decreased by 10% compared to initial values.2. A new JP75 cycle energy calculation model was established in SIMULINK with different transmission parts and efficiency parts included. The energy consumed in a complete cycle can be calculated and used to evaluate the ability of energy saving of this model. Besides, the best speed of shifting time in the gearbox was optimized so that we can get a lowest energy consumption value. Finally, a bench test was performed to verify the efficiency value optimized.3. A multi-body dynamic virtual prototype simulation model was built in ADAMS to assess the actual stress state and durability of gears, bears and chains in JP75 type irrigator. Finally some essential parts’ expecting life was evaluated in ANSYS.
