A Study On The Art And Theories Of Topiary

On the basis of literature research and field study, the thesis analyzed the application of topiary in the world three landscape architecture systems; summarized the different styles of topiary and history of each style. Taking topiary plants for landscape as the main line, the thesis summarized methods and application of topiary. The main results are as follows:First, the art of topiary has a long history and is applied in different landscape architecture systems. The application situation is closely related to the natural conditions and social environment of the region. It can be used in both regular and natural gardens to rich the diversity of plant landscape.Second, topiary has different styles, classified into oriental topiary, representatively in China and Japan and western topiary, representatively in Italy, France and Britain. Whether in east or west, the development of topiary had experienced twists and turns since ancient times, affected by the aesthetic changes and social situations in various periods.Last but not least, different styles and different types of topiary have different design methods and application environment. In the plant landscape planning and design process, designers should fully analyze the shapes and plant spaces wanted, and then select the most suitable kind of topiary.
