The growth status of tubers was monitored by the tuber monitoring system which was based on electrical resistance tomography in a non-invasive way. The tuber monitoring system obtained contour information of tuber slices, and the 2D images of tuber were generated. But those images could not fully reflect the information of the growth state and the distribution of tubers. So the study of the 3D reconstruction algorithm based on ERT was significant.In the paper, an intensive study was made of the tuber 3D reconstruction algorithm, CCD sensor was used to achieve the tuber slice images and extracted the profiles to verify the algorithm. As follows is research work in the paper:(1) The study of 3D reconstruction methods. Learning the reconstruction algorithm, especially, comparing the surface drawing and volume rendering, and choosing the surface drawing for the reconstruction which was suitable for this system. And using the hidden algorithm to improve the accuracy of the model.(2) Image pre-processing.2D images were achieved by CCD, and image pre-processing algorithms were used to handle the slice images, such as binaryzation, mathematical morphology algorithm. The noise in the images was removed, the contour information was improved.(3) The contours were extracted by the algorithm of extracting. The contour points were sampled by corner detection and NCC algorithm which were prepared for the reconstruction.(4) The comparative study of 3D reconstruction. After an intensive study of several reconstruction algorithms, the surface reconstruction from contours was selected, as the accuracy of this algorithm could not meet the requirement of the system, nonlinear interpolation and surface fitting algorithm were used to improve the accuracy of the tuber 3D model.(5) The design and development of software, and the verification testing based on CCD which was used to obtain the slice images of tuber. Generally, tubers grow thickly, and a single tuber may grow straightly or tipsily. So the contour matching algorithm is needed for the reconstruction to analysis the result and optimize the algorithm.
