The potato is the third largest food crops and one of the advantageous crops in Gansu province. Fora long time, potato in semi-arid region was planted using traditional culture and drilling technology.Although the potato production has certainly improved after plastic film mulching was introducted, theyield of potato varied obviously due to variable mulching planting pattern. This study incorporated thefilm muching and ridge culture and planted potato in six treatments in semi-arid region. The treatmentsare: full mulching with double ridges (T1), half mulching on single ridge (T2), full mulching with singleridge (T3), full mulching with convention planting (T4), half mulching with convention planting (T5),and drilling on bared ground (T6, CK). The emergence rate, stem number, height, yield of potato andsoil water content in different growth period of potato were measured. The effects of different treatmenton growth, yield, WUE, economic benefit of potato and soil water contents in potato fields wereanalyzed. The object of this study was to explore the optimal film mulching planting pattern. The resultsare:(1) Mulching can increase emergence rate and height of potato obviously. However, the emergencerate and height of potato was not only increased significantly than drilling on bared ground treatment, but also than mulching with convention planting treatments. T2and T3treatments have the highestemergence rate and height of potato.(2) The yield of potato was significantly increased by mulching. However, increasment of potatoyield was higher on mulching with ridge treatments than on mulching with convention plantingtreatments. T2and T3and T1had the higher increase production effectivenss among treatments.(3) The potato number per plant and potato yield per plant was higher in mulching treatments thanbared ground. T2and T3had the highest potato number and yield per plant. The big tuber number rateand big tuber mass rate were higher in mulching treatment than bared gound treatment. T3had thehighest big tuber mass trate.(4) The soil water content of potato field in semi-arid region was affects largely by precipitation. However, mulching increased significantly the soil water content of different layer and different periodcompare with bared ground treatment. T2and T3had the highest soil water content in potato fields.(5) Mulching treatment had the higher WUE among treatments. The WUE in mulching with doubleand single ridge was higher than both bared ground treatment and mulching convention plantingtreatments. The trends of WUE of potato was T3>T2>T1>T5>T4>T6.(6) Mulching treatment increased the commodity rate and commercial yield of potato. Mulchingwith single and double ridge had the higher commercial yield than mulching convention planting. T3treatment had the highest production value (32525.9yuan/hm2). Among treatments, higher earning wasin mulching with single and double ridge treatments, while T3had the highest earning (16825.70yuan/ hm2) among treatments. Those results show that mulching planting can obviously increase yield, WUE and economicbenefit of potato in semi-arid region. However, mulching with ridge culture had the higher soil watercontent, yield of potato, WUE and economic benefit than mulching convention planting. In alltreatments, T3and T2treatment are the optimal patterns. Considering the economic benefit, T3is thebest economical pattern among six treatments.
