In the process of Globalization, the urbanization of China is developing rapidly. Meanwhile, there has been the trend that the landscape of China cities is becoming similar. It has become an important part of urban development strategy to promote the characteristics of urban culture and develop the urban culture space. Urban culture space is not only the spatial performance of the Urban Cultural Resources, but also an important part of urban space and future development priorities. The article studies explore the theoretical connotation of urban culture space, which is based on Henry Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space and is combined with Jane Jacobs’ and other researchers’ relevant point of view in urban culture and urban sociology.By studying the physical bookstores as the sample of urban culture space, it on the one hand shows the urban culture is being eroded by the consumerism and is becoming symbolic. It also reveals the fact that capitalist mode of production dominates the space production, which leads to the homogeneity of urban space and the space segmentation by class divisions. On the other hand, It also shows in the analysis that there is possibility that the urban culture space can revolt and beyond the consumerism and capitalism by the power of culture. People can detach material consumption by spiritual experience in space walks and reading practice, which lead to the Free and comprehensive development of people. Shown from the research trends, the urban culture space is getting more concern, but has not yet been fully discussed. The article aims at filling the blank of this theory, and takes the research methods of theoretical reference, literature summary and the feedback of real evidences. The research takes physical bookstores as the starting point to show the picture of the development of urban culture space, which has certain theoretical meaning and practical value.The article is divided into five chapters in addition to the introduction. The introduction section explains the question and relevant background. It points out the meaning and research method, based on the reviews of home and abroad thesis. The first chapter explores and interprets the content of "urban cultural space", which is on the foundation of Henry Lefebvre’s space theory and combines with the theory of urban sociology and urban culture. It also includes the three-scale classification of urban cultural space and explains the bookstores’ characteristic of openness, diversity and so on. The second chapter summarizes the collected information of the history and industry of bookstores, and comes to a conclusion that bookstores assume three roles in cities: book sales sites, city information dissemination and public space for communication and experience. Due to the impact of capital and technical factors, the bookstore is facing the transition that its function of communication and experience is to enhance. The third chapter introduces the successful example of Nanjing Pioneer Bookstore as urban culture space. From micro- aspect, the three factors of place, people and events in Pioneer bookstore together create a space that full of culture implications. From meso-aspect, the Pioneer Bookstores that distributed in various regions of Nanjing are closely integrated with the cultural character of the area. From macroscopic aspect, Pioneer Bookstore has become a cultural landmark of Nanjing and has been an important component of the city’s image. The fourth chapter displays the humanistic dimension and the capital dimension of city culture space through the in-depth analysis of the bookstore space that described above. On the one hand, bookstores serve as micro cultural space, promote the communication between people and enhance the city soft power in humanities aspect. On the other hand, from the capital view, it also exists the consumerism, segment caused by cultural capital, and the control of the production of space and other issues. The fifth chapter summarizes the overall research results and calculates the urban culture space will have the trend of diverse demand, emphasizing the significance of places, capital segment, space fusion tendencies in the future.
