In the northern parts of China, winter is frigid and long, thus the demand of space heating is massive. As a traditional method of room heating and to providing a comfortable thermal environment for sleeping, Chinese kang has a long history. Chinese kang is a concrete bed which is designed to be heated by stove. It allows the user to heat the bed instead of the whole room, which could save a lot of energy comparing to usual stoves. But the traditional kang system has many defects too, such as poor thermal comfort, serious air pollution and inconvenience to use. So, to provide an alternative method to the kang system is of significance.Solar energy, being reproducible and environment friendly, is an important substitute for fossil fuel. In the present work, a new kind of system is developed by combining solar energy and kang system. The system is constitute of two subsystems: solar kang subsystem and solar air heater system. The designing of solar kang system introduced solar energy into the application of kang system in place of fossil or biomass fuel. It collects solar energy and use it to heat the kang during night, providing a comfortable sleeping environment. While the solar air heating system heats the room during the day. The combined system costs little to maintain once installed, and produces almost no pollution. The system provides a more convenient, more comfortable and environment friendly choice for the users. In the paper, the following works are done:Designed and built experimental platform of the system combining solar kang and solar air heating. The experiments are run in Qinghai province of China. Three different models of the system were tested, and the results of the tests were analyzed and discussed. The results shows that the system is effective.Mathematical model of the system is established and simulation program is compiled. The result of the simulation are compared with those of the experiments. The comparison show that the mathematical model and the simulation program is valid. The simulation program is able to simulate the whole process of the working of the system. And thus provides a method to test the system under different working condition and a method to verify the validity of improvements made upon the system.
