Roughness is one of the most important indexes to evaluate the quality of the pavement. To some extent, it represents the life span of the pavement and the comfort and safety when cars running on it. The main index to evaluate the pavement roughness is the smoothness of the road profile curve. When the curve is rather smooth, it means the road is rather smooth; otherwise it means the road is not. How to assess the pavement roughness with high-efficiency and high-speed is very important for the pavement inspection in China. Based on the existed problems nowadays, we designed a special vehicle to inspect the pavement roughness based on the principle of single chip computer and developed a set of corresponding software for it. It has important academic significance and engineering application value for the selected topic of this paper. There are several problems and original innovations in the paper as follows.We designed a pavement roughness inspection car based on the single chip computer, the tri-axis accelerometer, the L298 N double H bridge motor drive module, the NRF905 wireless data transceiver module and the HC-06 bluetooth wireless remote control module. The inspection car is easy to carry, simple to operate and flexible to inspect. It has higher accuracy and lower cost. The inspection car could realize continuous inspection task on the pavement. The measurement sensitivity accuracy could reach 1mm, which can meet the requirement of the Ministry of Transportation of China in detecting road flatness. When detect the flatness, the accelerometer collects the acceleration value along three different axis continuously and the angle data will be sent out by the NRF905 wireless data transceiver module. An closed-loop control system is applied based on the bluetooth wireless remote control module, which could rectify the car’s routine and guarantee it running on the right way.At the same time, we developed a set of software corresponding to the inspection car. It visualizes the pavement roughness inspection process and makes it automatic. The software system owns the following functions: data collection, data transmission and storage, real-time display,data output and so on. The evaluation index used here is international roughness index(IRI) and the standard variation of the roughness. The software turns out to be stable, fast and efficient.
