Automobile gear shift lever handling comfort has important influence on driving safety and handling comfort. Most of the researches into automobile comfort focused on the riding comfort, such as automobile vibration and seat comfort, whilst a few studies concentrated on the psychological feeling of the drivers during driving. In the meantime, most studies of operating mechanism comfort has been researched on the handling force and displacement of gear shift lever to build connection between objective variables and comfort of drivers, which is not intuitive to express the perception of comfort.This paper analyzed the process of handling automobile gear shift lever from the perspective of physiology, psychology and emotion effects. Gear shift lever handling process can be divided into three parts:initial status (the status in which drivers prepared to touched the gear shift lever), static reaction status (the status in which drivers touch the gear shift lever), dynamic reaction status (the status in which drivers operated the gear shift lever). Ten subjects were asked to handle the three different gear shift levers. Furthermore, subjects were asked to fill out the self-related health measurement scale (SRHMS), positive and negative affect scale (PANAS), exterior attitude Likert scale, feel satisfaction Likert scale, NASA-TLX, SART, body and mind observation scale according to their handling experience, which can evaluate driver’s subjective perception of comfort. In addition, these seven subjective results were taken as criteria to build automobile gear stick lever handling comfort evaluation index hierarchy model and evaluate the comfort level of the three gear shift levers by using fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP). At the same time, through force sensor and other instruments test three main parameters of the real car, on the basis of these parameters, using principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate the sorting of the gear shift lever handling comfort. According to the results, the psychological evaluation was consistent with the objective evaluation sorting of the three real car gear shift lever handling comfort, and the validity and rationality of psychological evaluation method for gear shift lever handling comfort has been proved.
