Currently, highway is in a critical period of construction and development, in Fujianprovince. By the end of last year,over4000kilometers highways have been built and morethan2000kilometers are under construction. The construction and management of these newprojects are really arduous tasks. Meanwhile, the funds for highway projects is increasing yearby year. The research for scientific quota design and reasonable cost control is a critical workfor highway project cost department in Fujian province. The key to the scientific and effective controlling the project cost is to determine thetypical engineering quantity of subgrade under different terrain conditions. In this paper, thelength and the method of terrain classification are determined based on relevant theories inhighway, surveying and topography areas. The probability density functions and reasonablerange of the technical indicators which are under different conditions are worked out byMATLAB software. Combined with the results of the correlation analysis, the multivariatenon-linear models between the mean indicators and the typical subgrade engineeringquantities are established based on the theory of regression analysis with the application ofMATLAB and SPSS software. In this paper, the method of terrain classification will provide reference for terrainclassification, alignment selection and technical indicators formulation in a way. In part, thedetermination of the reasonable range of the technical indicators will supply basis for schemecomparison and project examination. The establishment of the multivariate non-linear modelsbetween the mean indicators and the typical subgrade engineering quantities will play a rolein the aspects of scheme comparison, programme optimization, cost management and projectexamination.
