Because of the relatively high charging capacitance of Ultra High Voltage transmission lines, the contradiction between UHV transmission line’s over-voltage limitation strategy and its reactive power compensation strategy becomes prominent, while fix Controlled reactors on UHV line’s can solve this contradiction. Magnetic Controlled Shunt Reactor (MCSR) can harmonize the contradiction between over-voltage depression and reactive power compensation in extra high voltage grid effectively, and will be applied in a wide range in power system. In this paper, the structure features and operating characteristics of magnetically Controlled shunt reactor (MCSR) are deeply studied by computing magnetic field.Firstly, the working principle of MCSR is analyzed from the basis of the body structure of MCSR is illustrated.Secondly, the 2D transient mathematic model of MCSR is established by time-stepping finite element method. The magnetic field distribution of three-phase MCSR is shown, when the control currents are 20A, 150A, 300A.Thirdly, the current waveforms of working wingding and control wingding are obtained by the finite element analysis method. Then, the control characteristic, harmonic characteristic, volt-ampere characteristic of this 10kV MCSR prototype are theoretical analyzed on the basis of working mechanism of MCSR is described. Finally, the equivalent circuit model of MCSR is deduced, and the simulation model of MCSR is established by the magnetic circuit decomposition approach in Matlab/Simulink in this paper. The 3D static magnetic field finite element model of MCSR is established to calculate the leakage inductance of each wingding by the energy method. In order to verify the accuracy of simulation results, the simulation data and simulation current waveforms are compared with the measured result.
