The mother liquid of chloroacetic acid was generated because of the incompletely crystallization by the presence of dichloroacetic acid and acetic acid and other substances. The production and demand of chloroacetic acid were daily increasing with the continuous expansion of the scope of application, which caused more and more mother liquid of chloroacetic acid appeared. It was a intense research that how to deal with the mother liquid of chloroacetic acid effectively to turn it more valuable. It was also a big problem need to be addressed urgently for chloroacetic acid industry.In this paper, the conclusion that the best way to deal with the mother liquid of chloroacetic acid was turn it to methyl chloroacetate was made by comparing different treatment methods and referencing the market condition, and the optimum conditions were explored.The pretreatment of the mother liquid of chloroacetic acid was studied firstly. The optimum conditions of distillation under reduced pressure and freezing treatment were listed as follows: 20.6% of the chloroacetic acid was recovered by 8 hours’ frozen at-11 ℃; 8.92% of the acetic acid was recovered under vacuum degree of 0.095 MPa and 84℃.Vacuum distillation is more rational for the program through economic accounting which could increase 296.7 yuan profit when dealing with 1000 kilogram of mother liquid of chloroacetic acid.Then, esterification process was studied in this paper. The influence of different factors on esterification experiments was investigated through the single factor and orthogonal experiment method. The optimum conditions of the reaction was: the mole ratio of methanol and chloroacetic acid was 1.1:1; catalyst content was 3.5%, the temperature was 110 ℃. Under these conditions, the reaction rate was 4.83g/(L·min) and the conversion rate was 97.6%.Given the optimum conditions, the project that preparing methyl chloroacetate with 15,000 tons annual mother liquid of chloroacetic acid was designed in this paper. The design involves material balance, heat balance and a selection of major equipments based on calculational results. Based on the above, a list of equipment and process flow diagrams and equipment layout were drew up.At last, the conclusion is obtained that the project has come to a better financial indicators, a higher internal rate of return and profit ratio of investment than the value of industry benchmark and a lower pay back period than the base payback time by economic accounting and risk assessment of the whole project in 14 years. The project also has a certain ability to resist risks and market competition. In short, the project is feasible.
